I was only using soul samples as an example since you said “Get Ur Freak On” changed the game because it introduced Bhangra beats. Rza’s soul diggin and Primo’s beat chopping were and still are far more influential in the long run than the little Indian style trend that came and went.
But you listing Top Billing and Planet Rock and Outkast joints is just proving my point though. There’s plenty of songs that could and should be listed well before Get Ur Freak On, which was impactful but not a top 10 beat
"Get Ur Freak On" is the result of crate digging as well. The difference is that Tim's source came from a whole different culture and country. He talks about how the timing was different because the sample he used was different from Western music. That song opened the door to the possibilities of what you could do with sampling. And not only just the sample, the space in that beat, what he had going on with tablas, etc. This was something nobody else was doing. And yeah, it wouldn't have been a big deal if this was just some random song, but this was a huge record not just in real time, the song re-entered the charts in 2015.
I didn't say what should or shouldn't go before "Get Ur Freak On". Most of what I listed was absent from the list period.
