Breh the possibility of a shooting like this happening in our back yard was the furthest thing from anyone's mind. Anytime something like this happened overseas I'd tell my Wife that would never happen here.

This has changed our country forever however the love I'm seeing being shown to the Muslim community and people in general here is great to see.

An ex colleague organized for hundreds of halal and vegan meals to be made and delivered to the families at the hospitals. 1.2m has already been crowd funded for the local Muslim charity.

I'm hopeful that the unity will be stronger than ever before and any casual racism will be stepped out sooner.

That bit about the terrorist shooting the woman screaming for help as she lay face down in the street almost makes me want to throw up. I refuse to watch that video because I have zero desire to see something like that. I heard this a$$hole was grinning at reporters when he showed up in court.
These White supremacists are obsessed with coded symbols and iconography of knights from the Middle Ages. They really view themselves as soldiers in some sort of racial holy war.

People truly don't grasp how instrumental Gamergate is to this current strain of right wing hate movements.

I'm pretty far removed from GamerGate and thought is was just dumb kids bytching from basements before, but here's a rough sketch of how I understand it now:


Back in 2014, a bunch of gamers started making hateful attacks against a female game developer, including doxxing her to the point where she had to abandon her own home. It was difficult to see any meaningful basis for the attacks other than that she was a woman and dared to try to be a part of the gaming world. They were attacked for being entitled white males, but defended themselves as a righteous cause to save their culture, or a backlash against racist sexist attacks against White males, and it turned into a campaign to preserve "gamer" identity - which meant attacking anyone who wasn't a young white nerdy male.

A lot of the attacking originated from the gamer-heavy internet site called *****. The people who run ***** realized all that shyt was terrible and banned it reasonably quickly, so the racists ran off to a spinoff called 8chan that promised to allow "free speech" and let them say anything they wanted so llong as it wasn't illegal.

8chan has become an enthusiastic breeding grounds for every form of young white male resentment. But instead of relying on a bunch of depressing whiny screeds like previous White Supremacist and MRA advocates, they promoted their ideas with ironic memes, humor, and trolling. Then they claim they're "not serious" or "just nihilists" or whatever....yet they are probably the biggest evangelists for right wing hate in the online world and people are coming out of that culture and producing horrific acts of violence.

The Christchurch killer was an enthusiastic 8chan user, who announced on 8chan that he was about to commit a giant act of violence, who wrote his manifesto using a bunch of 8chan wording and techniques, and who has been applauded by plenty of 8chan users, some of which even laughed in real time as he carried out his attacks.

When GamerGate came out I sort of ignored it and sort of laughed at it. It was like, "damn, those little nerds in their parents' basements really got some issues."
