I think in our modern world men base their entire self-esteem on success in the material world. Having a good job, getting money, getting p*ssy, having a dope spot, etc.

Spirituality/religion, community & rites of passage gives boys/men a feeling of worth outside of those things like money and women. We don't have rites of passage anymore outside of losing your virginity or getting your first whip. The sense of community is breaking down. Spirituality / religion is something men can take on themselves.

It can be Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, stoicism, voodoo, Rastafarianism, whatever. I don't think it's a must necessarily, but we are throwing the baby out with the bathwater by completely throwing away spirituality for science. If you walk the eightfold path and TRY to achieve buddha nature you will feel like that dude even if you got 50 cents in your pocket.
