I picked Crawford numerous times, but I can't agree that Spence was shot pre fight, irrespective of accident, drinking, focus, depression, eye, weight drains etc. Everybody wanna say they saw the signs, well that's nothing new, people that know boxing saw that he was affected in various ways, way back to the Mikey Garcia fight. But he was still a live pick and was in great boxing condition those last 12 months.

Spence two best attributes have always been his will and his engine (they inform each other), I've said it before, but he's the fittest welterweight the sport has ever seen, the stats back that up, he has the highest punch output in bouts of any welterweight in history.

Is he the most dynamic welterweight? Hell no, nor is he all that complicated in style, but when he fights he pits his style to outwork you or go out trying, and thats what happened in the Crawford fight. Any boxer with that mentality and fitness is still a live wire in any fight, he just got dismantled by the better fighter, that's how it goes.

He should have already retired though, (coming from somebody that had to because of an accident and an accumulation of concussions).

I remember that concerned me. Then in 2 weeks or so before the fight I remember watching Spence fighter workout videos and knowing something was wrong. Then the weigh-in came and just looking at Spence body language and how he acted scared up there with Crawford made me worry something was off. Finally the night of the fight came. I was actually on a rafting trip. Got to the motel and mis-timed the main event. Went in the fight thread to get an update on the undercard results, only to see brehs talking about the 2nd round knockdown. Frantically went and found a stream and cut it on during round 4 or 5. Saw Spence face and immediately knew it was over. I actually turned the fight off after the 7th round bc I just couldn't watch. Ended up turning it back on again just before the stoppage. That night will always hurt .

I knew something was off when they had the final press conference and Spence's yellow complexion was worse than a two pack a day smoker, he looked like he was about to pass out, and ffs the same questions being asked again and again, terrible journalism being displayed by some that know better.

The actual weigh in was that evening if I remember correctly, and the ceremonial weigh in was purely for show the following day (those ceremonial weigh ins break tradition and process, I can't fukk with them at all).

From all accounts it was a bad camp, perhaps dropped in sparring, rumours of altitude runs without acclimation, James pre occupation with too many fighters, Joshua fight was two weeks after that). The fall out from that tells you that much, it doesn't take a genius to work out that things had gone wrong in the lead up. Either way he took the fight and made weight.

As far as the actual fight, he got timed from the jump and made to look sluggish, flat footed and devoid of his guard recoil. But worse still was Spence's unwillingness to give in and fight backwards like 99% of most boxers do when they're getting beat up bad (Tsyzu for recent example). It made for hard watching, seeing someone getting hurt so bad because they refuse to give in one inch. On the one hand you're stunned by the guts being shown not to relinquish your method and style (not sure he has another style tbh), but on the other you're horrified at the punishment being dished out, it was like seeing a soldier get shot again and again trying to cross into enemy barracks in no mans land. He just kept going and going and getting hurt worse and worse, sort of sickening to witness tbh, I felt really uncomfortable watching it.

All credit to Crawford though, he went from champion welterweight to all time great that night. Let's hope he beats the weight bully Alvarez.

Do you know how fukking strong and tough you have to be to brutally get your ass kicked by an all time great while being obviously compromised and weight drained, post several car accidents and a detached retina, to finish a fight ON YOUR FEET after being knocked down 3 times?? Bud couldn't even KO a compromised Spence, even with tossing everything but the kitchen sink, ref stopped/saved Spence from himself. Bud/Bomac and Co knew damn well they stalled that man out too (especially after taking the David fight). Now Bud is acting the diva he claims other fighters was by not fighting the people he SHOULD be fighting/giving the fans what they want.
