The fact that it wouldn't come out the other side is WORSE, because it means the earth will absorb the full quantum of energy

The earth would absorb most of the energy before it even got to the core. It’s a completely unrealistic scenario. And that’s under an assumption that at the speed of light, the needle retains its core properties and the speed remains static piercing our atmosphere and I think that’s unlikely.

People calling shyt they don’t understand dumb. It’s a thought experiment, of course it’s not real, but the math involved in these scenarios is real and that’s how they come to these conclusions. The same math that make it able for you to post these “dumb” responses.

I'm leaning towards the latter outcome: needle simply pierces through the earth with no impact.

My mind can't fathom something as small as a needle creating a significant explosion. Something bigger, and more blunt, sure. But a needle would just pass through and we wouldn't even notice :yeshrug:

Absolutely not:stopitslime:. A concorde plane traveling at the speed of sound has more momentum than a pin traveling at the speed of light.
