First and most importantly, they're fighting an uphill battle against corporate power. So most of the issues they advocate for are either squashed at infancy at a legislative level earlier on, or they are compromised and watered-down to inefficiency or ineffectiveness by partnering with corporate power.
And secondly, they are terrible organizationally. They act like whiny bytches who get mad and storm out of the door any time there's a frustrating situation.
Say what you want about the tea party. They are mostly fat, old, dumb racists who are easy to poke fun at, but they are dedicated and get results. They effectively neutered the oppositions' presidency for what's going to be 6 years, and stymied a lot of the first two as well (with help from the blue dogs and Democratic centrists).
If the candidate doesn't push for their issues, they tell them
and they're going to support someone who will.
When a candidate doesn't push for a democratic voters' issues, their base gets mad and say "fukk the Democrats and fukk the political system" and go home.
Granted, the average teabagger is 65 years old (I made up that number but I doubt it's far off) and has a lot of free time to worry about death panels and communism and all that. But they understand the importance of being organized and actively engaged at all levels of legislature. You can say they're astroturfed, but Eric Cantor outspent that teabagger dude 40-1 and still lost...by 10 points. That money goes into a black hole without the political will and organization.
The left has nothing like that. They don't pressure their candidates to fight for their issues. They're supposed to be smarter but they often seem to forget that laws are passed through Congress because they don't vote in mid-terms. I have heard several people vote for Obama, be disappointed in him and their response is to say fukk politics and not vote anymore.
The right votes for their candidate, they disappoint them, they shyt on him...
And then they fight tooth and nail, demanding that someone get in there that does represent what they want.
