well, both of these things are true (except Op ivy didn't become rancid, two of their members formed rancid after the breakup) ... they aren't even related to what I said.

Also, essentially every other band you've mentioned - aside from pearl jam - is utter garbage (candlebox being laughably bad). Craberries, hilarious. STP is a complete ripoff of PJ, and they ONLY surfaced because of the grunge wave that nirvana reluctantly started.

Nirvana was probably musically inferior to many bands of the era (and he was CERTAINLY less of a player than the metal bands before him), it wasn't about that. And, MTV had already been showing 120 minutes, giving burn to bands like the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr (with J Mascis, arguably the best MUSICIAN of the era), Throwing Muses, Sonic Youth, etc. "College Rock" was already a viable genre, and had a presence on major labels, even if it was more to enhance credibility than to sell millions of records. People RESPONDED to nirvana. I can't explain why ... but it was happening before the media/DCG records even had a clue.

If it was all about how well you could play, bands like Foghat or Journey would be more important than the Ramones. There must be something else in play. It isn't media creation (even though nirvana did benefit from a changing tide, and the media helped push that) -- look at how many bands are fans of kurt cobain. He had SOMETHING. And he helped change the game. There's really no denying that.

20 years later and nirvanas biggest songs are still iconic rock tunes. Boy that must have been some media campaign.

what rapper with a "niche" audience is sellin records these days? not many, if at all.

why would they cater to their shyt to an audience that ain't buyin their records? furthermore why would the labels invest in something that isn't selling?

they were at least able to go gold if they could put up a hit single ot two. and then you had the acts that had more of the IT factor to their music and were able to go national and platinum/multiplatinum with it. when this stopped being done, the music coincidentally stopped selling. this is indeed one of the reasons why sales are in the chitter, among other reasons like the over-commercialization of the muisc, pandering, etc.

there was consistently a high-level of dissappointment among record buyers(who couldve easily copped bootlegs or made dubs) leading up to downloading taking over.

you mentioned 50 cent in the OP but if 50 didnt sellout so hard, he wouldve been able to do at least okay, even on an indie, and even if the music is trash.

Come on breh. Music sales went in the shytter after the downloading epidemic. Once that shyt became the norm there was no going back.

We didn't wanna pay for the music so the industry collapsed on itself. Of course the quality of the music took a dive. You get what you pay for.
