A rapper's voice, delivery and confidence on the mic is more important than lyrics

no disrespect this really isn't some groundbreaking observation in 2013
It kind of is doe. Lot of spittin ass nikkas will never blow for this reason and a lot of brehs dont realize it.

A rapper would do better to solidify their track presence & vocal character than lyrical prowess, to keep it 111111000000 if we are talking about blowing. Technical skills are important though and what a lot of hot rappers these days are missing.

Lyrics are important too.

U can have the false swag and confidence on the the mic like Vanilla Ice attempted to perpetrate. But if your rhymes ain't tight then a rappa ain't right.

lyrics are great, but after all rap music is still music. rap songs are indeed songs, not term papers. in that regard, delivery is everything

If anything OP is right which is wack imo. I mean that other shyt does matter but it should NOT overshadow the actual lyricism. Also, having a likable image plays a HUGE factor in todays music world. Look at nikkas like A$AP Rocky, who isn't doing anything new music wise but people think he's cool and "high fashion" based on the shyt he wears and that shyt just makes his music cooler to kids who can't afford the shyt he's wearing. If you can't rap you shouldn't be a rapper imo. I get that there can be sub genres (Trap, conscious etc) but as a fan of actual lyricism I'd like to see more nikkas incorporate dope rhyme schemes, clever multis etc into their work instead of this whole swag rap/ratchet shyt thats everywhere. You'd think people would be tired of hearing the same lyrics over diff beats but I guess not.

Not if you want any longevity in the game

You gotta have lyrics if you want any kind of longevity. A person with lyrics can always reinvent themselves.

50 cent has all those things listed, but the guy is done musically. If you don't have the lyrical talent, when your run is over, your done. There's maybe only a few guys out there that have had a long career without lyrical ability.

Sounding good will only get you so far.

Rhyme schemes/metaphors/similes/multisyllabic rhyming are great and all, but it's all about being entertaining cuz that's what keeps you listening. If lyrics are delivered weakly with no sense of individual style, it becomes laborious as a listener. Aside from what the thread starter says to be the most important, a rapper's lyrics have to not be generic and be somewhat creative to keep me listening.
