The Middle Class Shrinks as the Number of High Income Households Grows
By CHELSEA GERMAN

The Washington Post ran a piece with the alarming headline, “The middle class is shrinking just about everywhere in America.” Although you wouldn’t know it from the first few paragraphs, a shrinking middle class isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As HumanProgress.org Advisory Board member Mark Perry has pointed out, America’s middle class is disappearing primarily because people are moving into higher income groups, not falling into poverty.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that after adjusting for inflation, households with an annual income of $100,000 or more rose from a mere 8% of households in 1967 to a quarter of households in 2014.

According to the Pew Research Center, 11% fewer Americans were middle class in 2015 than in 1971, because 7% moved into higher income groups and 4% moved into lower income groups. The share of Americans in the upper middle and highest income tiers rose from 14% in 1971 to 21% in 2015.

One has to read fairly far into the Washington Post’s coverage before seeing any mention of the fact that a shrinking middle class can mean growing incomes:

“[In many] places, the shrinking middle class is actually a sign of economic gains, as more people who were once middle class have joined the ranks at the top. [For example, in] the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the share of adults living in lower-income households has actually held steady [from 2000 to 2014]. The households disappearing from the middle-class, rather, are reflected in the growing numbers at the top.”

Other cities with a shrinking middle class, a growing upper class and very little change in the lower class include New York, San Francisco and New Orleans. So the next time you hear someone bemoan the “shrinking middle class,” take a closer look at the data and keep in mind that it may actually be a sign of growing prosperity.

@DEAD7 don't run off and hide your hands I want you to explain this to me in your own words.
It seems pretty simple to me

More people are moving up than moving down. And US Census data backs it up. Don't get angry because reality doesn't jive with your preconceptions

Truth is...the "middle class" was always a lie.
It was a hustle that people bought into.

and what people thought was the middle class, will never return.
The "middle class" only existed for a short period of time in history.
When Europe was bombed out, Communism was still alive, and the 3rd world was totally on the bottom.

Basically, America was the only game in town, and there was no competition.
Things are completely different now.
You cant just think youre going to go to school and get a good job.

You have to treat yourself as a business.
There has never been more opportunity available in the world...so you have to actively go and get it...
...the flip side of that is...if you dont really hustle and get your skills up....you will be shyt out of luck.

If youre not focused on your money...youre going to be in a world of hurt in the coming years.

Did you read the article?

I need more than the census bureau, I honestly don't see it being an accurate indicator when I've looked at reports for different places. Also all you hear are complaints about stagnate wages in this country. I also find something very questionable about shrinking middle class in the cities listed but a steady lower class. It goes against all reasoning.

You also hear a lot of complaints about non-existent transgender sexual assaults and the 1% not paying their fair share in taxes. I'm going to take a statistically validated national survey over ideologically convenient musings of the American public. Unless you have a more empirically validated source to call BS on this with you sound kind of stupid right now :yeshrug:

Wealth inequality is good. It makes the takers in the world strive for more.
