Tashonna Ward collapsed hours after seeking medical help at an emergency room in Milwaukee for chest pains and shortness of breath.
(CNN)Tashonna Ward walked into an emergency room in Milwaukee one evening this month to get treatment for chest pains and shortness of breath.

After waiting more than two hours, the 25-year-old left and went to seek help at an urgent care, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner said in a report. She collapsed by her car as soon as she arrived at the urgent care, and was pronounced dead not long after.
Her family wants to know why it took so long for her to get medical help.
"I really don't think they cared about my daughter," her mother, Yolanda Ward, told CNN affiliate WDJT. "She should not have been waiting out there that long."

Hospital arrival: 4:58 p.m.
The younger Ward arrived at the Froedtert Hospital emergency room in Milwaukee on January 2. It was 4:58 p.m.
She was there for 2 hours and 29 minutes, the medical examiner's report said. During that time, she got an electrocardiogram (EKG), which was normal, and a chest X-ray that showed she had cardiomegaly -- an enlarged heart.
Ward had a miscarriage in March, after the umbilical cord wrapped around her baby's neck, and had been told she'd developed an enlarged heart during the pregnancy, the medical examiner's report said.
It's unclear whether she'd had the enlarged heart all along since the pregnancy. Cardiomegaly can be caused by short-term stress on the body such as pregnancy, or a medical condition like the weakening of the heart muscle, coronary artery disease and heart valve problems.

Emergency room exit: 7:27 p.m.
Around 7:27 p.m., upset by the long wait, Ward left the ER and headed to an urgent care with her sister in search of faster medical help.
"She didn't even have a band on her wrist (when I picked her up) so she was never even processed in," her sister, Brianna Ward, told the affiliate. "All they did was take her to the back, do chest X-rays, send her back in the lobby. She was never even admitted."
While at the hospital, Ward posted messages on Facebook criticizing the long wait, the affiliate reported.
Hospital's phone call: 8:39 p.m.
About an hour later, at 8:39 p.m., the hospital called her phone to check on her.
Her sister told the caller that Ward had collapsed by their car as soon as they arrived at the urgent care, and was on the way back to the hospital in an ambulance, according to the report.
"I need them to explain this to me, why they didn't treat my daughter when she was there," her mother told the affiliate.

Return to emergency room: 9:07 p.m.
By the time she arrived at 9:07 p.m., Ward was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead minutes later -- at 9:25pm. The cause of death was hypertensive cardiovascular disease and the manner of death was natural, according to the medical examiner's office.
The hospital declined to provide details, citing patient privacy laws.
"The family is in our thoughts and has our deepest sympathy," hospital spokesman Steve Schooff told CNN.
Ward's relatives said they are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, and they're hoping to find out what happened to the beloved day care teacher who loved children.
"We ask that those who hear about Tashonna's story continue to keep us in prayer, as this is still overwhelming and unbelievable," her family said in a statement. "We are wracked by grief, yet we are grasping to find answers."
The family's attorneys said they're working to get more information on her death. "The issues surrounding this tragedy involve more than just the Ward family, as they are issues that pose a threat to us all," attorney B'Ivory LaMarr said in a statement.
CNN's Natalie Andes contributed to this report

I understand this can happen to anybody, but we need to get our health together. How can you say you don't trust white doctors while letting yourself get that big? If we took care of ourselves we wouldn't have to depend on racist institutions. We need to stay away from the hospital as much as possible until we find blacks that can help us.

I work in an ER from time to time. Chest Pain and SOB are top reasons for ER visits based on what i see in my field.

That hospital should triage a hell of a lot better going forward
I was always under the assumption that chest paint patients go to the front of the line to be seen. She should have got an ekg fairly quick

When did she say that?

What does her weight have to do with that long ass wait?

:snoop: what this has to do with doctors performing their job?

If the EKG was normal, and the other vitals were normal, not sure what they were supposed to do. Sucks but you wouldn’t be viewed as a chest pain and shortness of breath priority in the ER if your oxygen saturation and ekg are normal. If they weren’t normal and they didn’t move her to the front, that’s malpractice. Otherwise it’s just shyt luck the ER was full and/or had more priority patients

Blacks don't trust white doctors, our history with them isn't good. Racism actually saved us from the opioid crisis.

Her weight has a lot to do with the wait time, because if she wasn't obese chances are less likely she wouldn't have needed to be at the emergency room. Now this can happen to anybody, but it's been proven that excess weight can cause a lot more harm to your body overtime.

That's the thing, I don't expect the doctors to do their job. These hospitals are not only overcrowded, but often racist against blacks. Why depend on them when you can place matters in your own hands and lead an active life style? As I said before this can happen to anybody no matter the weight, but you obviously more at risk when you're overweigh.

We need to take care of ourselves better so less of us have to depend on these institutions. Things will not get better for us anytime soon, so we need to take matters in our own hands.

I'm glad I scrolled through before commenting. 25 years old,and grossly overweight. This is stuff that should be addressed with your medical provider. Did she have a plan? Was she following her Doctors orders? That doesn't excuse the bullshyt she had gone through at the ER. Her complaints are ones that will get you in the ER immediately.

The only reason to be a Doctor is if you wanna specialize (Surgery, Plastic, etc). Malpractice is no joke. Alot of Hospitals are using mid level providers because there is a shortage of actual MD/DOs

This points to a bigger problem. Lack of good health care, patients not giving a shyt about their health.

shyt, I went to Hofstra for a year. Long story short, got really shytfaced and face planted on a pylon. The doctor refused to stitch me up until I "told him the truth".

shyt, this is a common occurrence. The VA is a fukking travesty. I had that work at one in Chicago while in Corpsman school. Those nurses were completely shytty to the folks being treated.
