Dave Meltzer is a pretty poor writer, imo. I mean in the sense of synatx, editing, and clarity. He really should wait a few days or maybe even a week to do his postmortems on careers, because he ALWAYS overstates the importance of whatever guy just died or retired.

Acting like Bryan was a trailblazer for WWE instead of following on the path already cut down by guys like Savage/Hart/HBK/Eddie/Benoit/Jericho and even Punk is weird at best, insulting to his readers at worst.

Yeah, having such a short deadline with so many shyt to write really fukks with his writing. It's why I mostly give him a pass when there's some issues with his big pieces.

And I'm pretty sure Dave focused on Bryan's late years because he knows he's gonna have to write another bio for him when he's inducted into the WON HOF this year (there's no way he doesn't get in the year). That's also a better time to write about his whole career and put it a in bigger context, specially if Dave want to stress the point of DB influencing the business in some way (I'm not sure I canco-sign him on that yet though, it's too early to tell imo).

It's funny with the chronology in his obits/tributes, like he'll take about Savage winning the world title then the next line will be about where he was born. Then it'll be Memphis followed by his debut. I guess it's heavy stream of consciousness post modern stuff though. I can't read any linear books myself.

Every name you mentioned with the exception of CM Punk, all had to use steroids to change their bodies to receive that push from Vince. Bryan also walked in the door quite literally as a jobber. I remember him being 0-12 on NXT and the fans voted him #1 every week. Meltzer was mostly referring to the way the fans forcing his push through in a way not done before. That was trailblazing

Bryan wasn't a jobber. Losing doesn't = jobber. Bryan was THE focus of the first season of NXT, THE break out star, and it was geared to be his introduction to WWE fans who didn't know him and might have trouble getting behind this tiny normal looking dude. Just like Season 2 was geared around Low Ki in almost exactly the same manner.

As for the other guys, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Spending years traveling the world gaining experience in many different styles (well, except for HBK), considered to have no chance because they were small, stuck in juniors and the mid card, yet ended up breaking out and being champions anyway. Eddie and Benoit were on gear before they were in WWE. Probably before they were even in WCW. The only difference between their paths and Bryan's was the difference in classification for what an indie was or wasn't before 2002.

They never forced the fans hand until Bryan. Never seen anything like it except maybe Rock in 99 when the fans made him the priority over Cripple H/Austin..they tried to put him in that tag team with Foley and fans made him the highest rated and by September, he was right back in the main event.
