THIS! So much of this. I really want to go into the narratives these sport debate shows have put on athletes because it really has been a sort of gift and curse type of thing with NBA players and clearly them not wanting to be a subject of a 30 for 30 in a bad light plays into it. Still, these debate shows give alot of credit to players that took the "harder road" (see Allen Iverson) but I can't see this being the issue that lead into the NBA being pretty noncompetitive league wide.
I do hate the fact now that titles have become the only defining moments for NBA players, because performing under pressure is no longer viewed as career defining, now it's just getting to alot of Finals.
Basketball fans have little to no reverence for non championship achievements. Reg season MVP is the only that people give a shyt about.
If Mike Trout were to break DiMaggios 56 game hitting streak, Baseball would collectively lose its shyts. It would be the marked achievement of the year eclipsing most other teams if they won the WS.
Meanwhile over in the NBA, we call Westbrook a stat padder and said his getting the record is meaningless because the Thunder weren't a deep playoff team
