She got hype for being fat, and for singing songs that appeal to old people (people have a huge aversion towards anything pop)

I don't think she's even that great a singer. How she any better vocally than Lady Gaga?

I said the exactly same thing a few weeks ago when her name was brought up. Her weight gave her a market that benefited her, and differentiated her from her fellow peers. She a good singer and I like one or two of her songs, but it’s a shame that a curvy black woman with better vocals will never be on her level globally.

She's ok, I remember when she was a fat chick rolling around on the ground in her videos, there is no way anybody could have predicted she would be this big.

She wouldn't be rated as highly as she is if she wasn't fat/British and has "deep" subject matter.

You say she's overrated/overhyped but the bolded is the exact reason why she's so popular and does so well among her target audience. Despite the fact that the industry is desperate to label her a pop singer, Adele is an adult contemporary artist who sings ballads. Even though she's popular across many demographics, her white Gen X - early millennial target demo resonates with that "deep" subject matter the most. 42yr old Caucasian divorcées do NOT want to hear upbeat pop songs about 'heartbreak' sung by 20-something vaguely foreign looking girls.

I also think y'all are making too much out of her being fat when she came on the scene, especially since that body positivity shyt wasn't even a thing back then. I don't think too many people were hyping her up JUST BECAUSE she was fat. I mean that was peak anorexia blog/America's Next Top Model era. If anything it was assumed she'd flop and be a one hit wonder if she didn't drop the weight. She mainly reached her current level of success INSPITE rather than because of her being fat.

Her being fat made her relatable though

i think alot of people assumed she was on that Lizzo "fat and proud" shyt. But maybe i missed it, but i don't think Adele was ever happy to be on that shyt. Team Body Positivity just claimed her without asking. :mjlol: Then when she lost weight they turned around and said praising her weight loss is bad.
