It all comes down to money and control.

Remember, the NFL not only wants the artist to pay the performance, but also wants a cut of the money from the exposure that comes from it in the case of music sales.

The NFL needs Taylor Swift more than she needs them as they’re benefiting in increased female fan attention to the Kelce relationship.

Artists don’t pay for their own performances, the NFL covers all production costs but they don’t pay the artists directly.

Probably true. But they might have to rethink that. Eventually they will have the Verzuz problem - no potential artists left. Either they won’t be big enough for the Super Bowl stage or they will turn it down.

Seems like an issue that can be negotiated. What does the NFL need the rights to it for? Are they planning on releasing a documentary on halftime performances? It’s gonna be on the net permanently anyway.

Michael Jackson, in lieu of payment, got the NFL to donate to one of his charities and run a charity specific commercial that MJ starred in.

I’m assuming that Taylor Swift wanting “ad time” was for her album promo and not any type of charity so they balked, plus owning the performance would set a bad precedent as the NFL stands to make millions off YouTube views alone, not to mention licensing clips of the performance in future documentaries and such.
