21 was not exceptional and cohesion doesn't have much bearing on how good/successful an album turns out to be, but lets put that aside for a sec.

Adele benefited from being the perfect alignment of a number of things that came together at exactly the right time. From the tapping of a potent buying market (Non internet-savvy 25-40+ females; the teenage/young adult demographic aren't responsible for her sales.) that label heads thought had all but disappeared and had stopped plugging for, to the dominance of hyper stylised artists like Gaga and Katy Perry to play her 'authenticity' against and a host of others etc.

It would be daft to assume that an albums sales are a direct reflection of its quality, especially in comparison to what else is being made within that field and while I could point to a number of R&B albums released in 2011 that I think were better, there would be no point going through the trouble of pointing them out if we weren't at least agreed on that point.

^^^ this right here is one of the best posts in the thread

Look, I'm one to feel it does take a Classic some time to become one. My personal opinion is 5 years but sometimes we do have Instant Classic that just impact the game. "21" did that, it did win Album of the Year, critics loved it and fans loved it not just here in the U.S. but all around the world. The album some song great writing and producing on it. No to mention she can actually sing. Right now a year later after it was released people still are listening to the album. It's headed to Classic status, it's one of the best reviewed and highest selling albums this century. I didn't make the rules, I just tell it like it is. "21" if not today is on a trajectory for Classic Status.

do you think the music is classic or what?

winning an award and all this other chit doesnt make a classic.

In all fairness, Rolling in the Deep is much better than any Jill Scott song I've heard.

When R&B can sound this good again, Adele will continue to reign

It's sad,
we will never have another duet like that for at least 10-15 yrs.
Sad how medications and drugs both messed them up,
in retrospect the both represented neo soul culture to the fullest.

Also people blaming Adele for RnB "Not getting the same attention" need to stop. Most of the RnB being released is TRASH. It took Maxwell and Sade to come out of retirement to show Usher, Rihanna and Chris Brown what RnB is really about. Both Maxwell and Sade went PLATINUM with REAL RnB. Meanwhile They still too busy trying to fill up clubs in Europe instead of trying to sing. Atleast Adele keep it Vocal something most RnB singers aren't doing with all that robotic autotune crap. Usher did drop some heat with "Climax" but everything else has been terrible.

D'Angelo needs to come back, he was the last REAL RnB dude in the game. His music brought back members of me being a kid listening to my parents listen to Classics from the 60's and 70's. RnB has nobody to blame but themselves. Adele of course is going to get white people behind her cause she's white. That's obvious but plenty of Black people brought her LP too cause that voice is undeniable. Like with Hip Hop, I'm disgusted with the state of RnB also, it's pathetic.

I think the album was pretty good. I admit I liked the singles most, I think all 3 are Classics. But the other songs I heard were good. The album wasn't perfect by any means but after I actually heard it, I wasn't surprised by it's success. Some albums just connect, "21" is that album where even if you weren't a fan of hers you could sit down and hear it and respect it's artistic quality. Also the sales and awards are mostly about it's impact. Classic status is mainly determine by a particular art quality. But when that art is critically acclaimed you can't overlook that either cause that shows a consensus. It's only been out for a year, but I do think it's headed to Classic status for sure.

man. this is bullchit. you think people are complaining in favor of usher & rihanna? also, i can tell that you dont even follow r&b by reading this post.

and its not even about complaining. a nicca just said that this should not be celebrated on this forum, especially in the booth. and thats just real talk. then the thread spiraled into 1,000 other directions.

as for the classic argument, youre doing alot of beating around the bush as usual. and no, critical acclaim dont mean chit. its just another word for hype.

Raheem Devaughn is another talented R&B dude.
The Love&War Masterpeace is a fvcking Epic album, well worth
the money I spent.
Two and a half (maybe three...) albums worth of music.
A bunch of Hip Hop and R&B features, conscious records, love records, dance
records. Just :wow:

Jesee Boykins III is also great, I bought "The Beauty Created" and I've
gotten well over 30 plays out of it :yeshrug:
His "Way Of the Wayfarer" EP is fvcking nice too.

Not to mention Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and Miguel holding it down on a
more "mainstream" level.

I gotta say I disagree with the "R&B is garbage nowadays" bullsh1t rather vehemently.

Too many talented cats get slept on when these close minded dudes go on their bullsh1t rants about what's terrible they focus on the negative so much they forget to seek out the positive.

I also feel these dudes are talented song writers, on the same level of Adele :yeshrug:
