An uneducated populace is a corrupt governments wet dream. Think they give a fook if their people can read and write? They are happy to keep their people down whilst they keep the loot for themselves. :manny:

A 2002 African Union study estimated that corruption cost the continent roughly $150 billion a year. One can only imagine what that figure is at today.

i think by you "sponsoring" a child you are contributing to the corruption, people will not rise and challenge their government if they know some ngo or some outside money is going to feed them and school them

I'm not sure if the point of this thread was to encourage visitation or to talk bad about the media...

But me and a few friends are planning a trip, only one of us has been previously.. She has her list of nations that she's never been.

Her list is based on sh1t I don't care about (she wants to go help people).

What are 3 nations for me to recommend?

What I care about: I want to see real cities and buildings not only villages. I want to see eyecandy. I want to have at least a large percentage of the people speaking English.

There is no way I can make a real humanitarian difference on a 4 week trip, so I also need to know populations that have less than 25% aids rates.

man, great point. I forgot to mention.. I really want to scope out the business scene and potential to make bread.

I read this about Santiago.. Santiago: South America's Silicon Valley? - CNN.com

And I'm wondering what is the spot like this in Africa that I can make doe from; like people did in the early 90's with India.

I know in East Africa, English is fairly common. It's also extremely dangerous imo.
That's where most people to go to volunteer. Any former English Colony you'll find English being common. English is one of the few languages worth learning so its taught everywhere possible. Most of North/West Africa will speak French or Portuguese, you'll still find people who speak English though. I regret not being able to go Senegal/Dakar last year. guinea basso or burkina fasso has tons of cheap snort you could go there. South Africa is supposed to be really nice but something about going there rubs me the wrong way.

Are you the same Blacking from sohh?

I made the thread because I had no idea Africa looked the way it does
It's always portrayed as lions, elephants, huts,
villages, hunger, rape, aids, drought and bugs
It's naive but I didn't even think they had electricity out there
Let alone beautiful cities that can compare
To any city that history can mention
Im pretty sure I'm not the only 1 who had that perception
If the thread encourages visitation, that's cool, but that wasn't my intention
So to all those who are competent
Please don't forget the misrepresented continent

The humanitarian thing is silly?

:why:

Breh, I think you are ignoring the fundamental problems that are holding Africa back. Lack of education, lack of infrastructure and the high levels of corruption.

The only way that can be solved is by educating, feeding and protecting the African youth.

Spend a month in any African nation living like the average citizen and you will soon change your tune.

and we can fix those things by us black people investing in ourselves and holding our governments responsible, not by outside organizations running things in black countries

No, he's right. Many countries in Africa do not need more charity dollars, they need investment dollars. Two of those things you listed (infrastructure and education) are fixed by investment. Educated Africans show that they can keep up with and surpass others in terms of success in other countries. But they never return to their own countries (brain drain) because of the lack of opportunity. Why go back to a place w/ no growth and less opportunity because no one is investing there?

An empowered populace is less susceptible to that corruption we see imo, although I admit that is the most difficult problem to address in Africa. But in terms of everything else, I have been to some African countries, and some countries that are heavily coveted as the next big economic centers and they look the same. Some regions high developed, others incredibly underdeveloped with a lack of infrastructure (Brazil and India come to mind). The difference? Investment dollars are being put into those BRIC countries, this is not so in Africa.

Where can I fine gentlemen such as myself, with some disposable income, invest in Africa?

You all seem like knowledgeable fellas involving the Mother Continent.

Companies? Industries? Are American-invested small businesses welcomed? Any stocks?

Thanks friends.

Another issue with receiving humanitarian and charity aid is that you don't qualify for business or investment loans from other countries, your international credit rating drops, and no money from the IMF

Read this last year, that's part of the reason Haiti has been held back so long

I agree. I don't even wanna break it to my humanitarian friends that all their months in Africa working with all these C@C ran groups don't amount to sh1t.

We need business development in those nations. Period. The only good thing that a C@C ran organization can do for any human in Africa is Aid education, nets over doors, and water treatment.. ... then leave. Don't push any religion and culture, or anything else.
