African Americans often pick low-paying college majors, study says

The high school graduation rate for African American students in New Jerseyeclipsed 80 percent for the first time in 2015, according to state data.

But a new study released Tuesday found that African American students headed to college are likely to end up in some of the lowest-paying college majors.

Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce found that while more African Americans are attending college, they are also highly concentrated in lower-paying majors, such as social work or human services and community organization.

"The low-paying majors that African Americans are concentrated in are of high social value but low economic value," said Anthony P. Carnevale, director of the Georgetown Center and co-author of the report.

African Americans make up 12 percent of the U.S. population but account for 8 percent of general engineering majors, 7 percent of mathematics majors and 5 percent of computer engineering majors, the study found.

Meanwhile, African American students make up 21 percent of health and medical administration services majors and 20 percent of human services and community organization majors.

The study is based on the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey from 2010-2014.

Here are the five majors with the highest concentration of African American students and the median salary:

1. Health and medical administration services: 21 percent ($46,000)

2. Human services and community organization: 20 percent ($39,000)

3. Social Work: 19 percent ($41,000)

4. Public Administration: 17 percent ($52,000)

5. Criminal justice and fire protection: 15 percent ($48,000)

Even in the same major we still get paid less. Also, at lot of black students come from shytty schools with crappy math classes, and so end up ill-prepared for college majors with a lot of mathematics involved and would be more likely to struggle/drop out in those majors.

That said, I do agree that we should try to pick majors with good job prospects.

I mean honestly what isn't a low paying college major?

Does it even matter when AA's are paid less than their white peers?
The Engineering majors (Civil, Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical, Computer), as well as Mathematics and Physics.
Majoring in Finance and Economics are also traditionally higher-paying.
A lot less Black students double-major or choose rigorous majors.
And there's also this silly idea that you have to major in something to be knowledgeable in it, you can focus on social issues heavily and study them, as well as sociology and political theory without majoring in it.
A lot more Black students also go to less- known, and less rigorous schools, and that only adds to it.
Remember that thread about how many Black kids go to shyt like Devry?

A job is a job. The knee jerk reaction to this news will be people shytting on these professions. If they're picking those majors because they're settling, that's one thing. If they're picking them because that's where there heart is and they want to use those positions to get their foot in the door for upward mobility, then kudos.

Bruh, theres no useful outcomes here.

Other demographics don't do this shyt. They major in getting paper and owning skills that they can translate into businesses.

All the social activism comes when they have the money an power to change things, not trying to intellectualize shyt in academic contexts no one follows.

A job has lost its purpose. Everyone advocating these super genius professions when worker unions no longer exist. On top of lack of group economics.

Doing something that you love with a successful entrepreneurial mindset > doing some shyt that will drive people insane and with no job security.
