A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown (A Song of Wraiths and Ruin #1)
819n2b7mYUL.jpg

For Malik, the Solstasia festival is a chance to escape his war-stricken home and start a new life with his sisters in the prosperous desert city of Ziran. But when a vengeful spirit abducts Malik’s younger sister, Nadia, as payment into the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal—kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia’s freedom.

But Karina has deadly aspirations of her own. Her mother, the Sultana, has been assassinated; her court threatens mutiny; and Solstasia looms like a knife over her neck. Grief-stricken, Karina decides to resurrect her mother through ancient magic . . . requiring the beating heart of a king. And she knows just how to obtain one: by offering her hand in marriage to the victor of the Solstasia competition.

When Malik rigs his way into the contest, they are set on a course to destroy each other. But as attraction flares between them and ancient evils stir, will they be able to see their tasks to the death?

The first in a fantasy duology inspired by West and North African folklore in which a grieving crown princess and a desperate refugee find themselves on a collision course to murder each other despite their growing attraction.

A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy (A River of Royal Blood #1)

In a North African-inspired fantasy world, two sisters must fight to the death to win the crown.

Sixteen-year-old Eva is a princess, born with the magick of marrow and blood--a dark and terrible magick that hasn't been seen for generations in the vibrant but fractured country of Myre. Its last known practitioner was Queen Raina, who toppled the native khimaer royalty and massacred thousands, including her own sister, eight generations ago, thus beginning the Rival Heir tradition. Living in Raina's long and dark shadow, Eva must now face her older sister, Isa, in a battle to the death if she hopes to ascend to the Ivory Throne--because in the Queendom of Myre only the strongest, most ruthless rulers survive.

When Eva is attacked by an assassin just weeks before the battle with her sister, she discovers there is more to the attempt on her life than meets the eye--and it isn't just her sister who wants to see her dead. As tensions escalate, Eva is forced to turn to a fey instructor of mythic proportions and a mysterious and handsome khimaer prince for help in growing her magick into something to fear. Because despite the love she still has for her sister, Eva will have to choose: Isa's death or her own.

Rising Star Captain Janet Ruvuma doesn’t know failure.

Except in capturing Mavurama, the leader of a group of rogue, genetically engineered ex-marines. Every time she springs the trap, he slips through her fingers. Five years of pursuit and still he eludes her. The Emperor is out of patience. Ruvuma has to catch him, dead or alive, or she will taste defeat for the first time.

Mavurama desires only peace and quiet. The Emperor made him and his men what they are. He fought for the Emperor. He won the war for the Emperor. Now he wants to retire. But the Empire won’t allow it, and Mavurama will do whatever it takes to claim his peace. Even escape beyond the edge of the known galaxy.

Ruvuma and Mavurama play a cat and mouse game that stretches across the universe. But Mavurama can’t hide forever. He needs blood, and lots of it, to take with him on his trip into the unknown. Ruvuma can’t let him go. She’ll bring the fury of the empire to bear on him and his soldiers before she lets him disappear.

Will Ruvuma conquer her greatest enemy? Or will Mavurama manage to take the suicidal leap into the Dead Space of the universe first?

Scarlet Odyssey by C.T. Rwizi (Scarlet Odyssey #1)

Magic is women’s work; war is men’s. But in the coming battle, none of that will matter.

Men do not become mystics. They become warriors. But eighteen-year-old Salo has never been good at conforming to his tribe’s expectations. For as long as he can remember, he has loved books and magic in a culture where such things are considered unmanly. Despite it being sacrilege, Salo has worked on a magical device in secret that will awaken his latent magical powers. And when his village is attacked by a cruel enchantress, Salo knows that it is time to take action.

Salo’s queen is surprisingly accepting of his desire to be a mystic, but she will not allow him to stay in the tribe. Instead, she sends Salo on a quest. The quest will take him thousands of miles north to the Jungle City, the political heart of the continent. There he must gather information on a growing threat to his tribe.

On the way to the city, he is joined by three fellow outcasts: a shunned female warrior, a mysterious nomad, and a deadly assassin. But they’re being hunted by the same enchantress who attacked Salo’s village. She may hold the key to Salo’s awakening—and his redemption.

Temper by Nicky Drayden
6138NoP5RiL.jpg

In a land similar to South Africa, twin brothers are beset by powerful forces beyond their understanding or control in this thrilling blend of science fiction, horror, magic, and dark humor—evocative of the works of Lauren Beukes, Ian McDonald, and Nnedi Okorafor—from the author of The Prey of Gods.

Two brothers.
Seven vices.
One demonic possession.
Can this relationship survive?

Auben Mutze has more vices than he can deal with—six to be exact—each branded down his arm for all the world to see. They mark him as a lesser twin in society, as inferior, but there’s no way he’ll let that define him. Intelligent and outgoing, Auben’s spirited antics make him popular among the other students at his underprivileged high school. So what if he’s envious of his twin Kasim, whose single vice brand is a ticket to a better life, one that likely won’t involve Auben.

The twins’ strained relationship threatens to snap when Auben starts hearing voices that speak to his dangerous side—encouraging him to perform evil deeds that go beyond innocent mischief. Lechery, deceit, and vanity run rampant. And then there are the inexplicable blood cravings. . . .

On the southern tip of an African continent that could have been, demons get up to no good during the time of year when temperatures dip and temptations rise. Auben needs to rid himself of these maddening voices before they cause him to lose track of time. To lose his mind. And to lose his . . .

Cool! What's 'Son of the Storm' like?
It’s enjoyable so far for the most part. You can tell the author spent a lot of time on worldbuilding in particular, because there’s a fair bit of detail describing the main government and how it functions, and the author has a cool idea in the fact that social classes are denoted by the darkness of your skin; the darker the better, which is a nice twist on colorism. If I had a nitpick, I would say my only problem with the novel so far, is that at times, the novel seems to throw concepts and terms at you in rapid succession, without giving you time to breathe or digest it. Otherwise, I like it so far. It leans heavily into African oral tradition.

I hope you guys (and gals) are buying or at least checking out some of the African-based speculative fiction, I'm posting!?
I have Nicky Drayden's Prey of the Gods. I've yet to read it, though.

Amalgam Comics in Philly stay showcasing black independent comics. Unfortunately, they're closing down soon, but I've gotten everything I can find from them...including this some years back:

A Cry to War (The Last Warrior King Book 1) by E.O. Odiase
412YUlsEqtL.jpg

A generation has passed, and the devastation of war is slowly fading away but the scars remain, lingering in the hearts and minds of many. In an era of peace, King Ewuare remains conflicted, torn between opening closed wounds or allowing his reign of peace and prosperity to continue.

As the King tries to resolve his moral conflict, the gods have a different agenda. Sinister and supernatural forces amass on the summit of the Agbon mountains, deep into the clouds, where no man dare stray, where the wind bites cold and the forest stays forever frozen.

Within, lies a tale of Kings and Queens, warriors and commoners, slaves and sorcerers, and the consequences of their hurried actions. African tribes head to battle with swords forged of bronze and steel, wild beasts bending to the will of man and fighting side by side. A boy travels across the known world, through treacherous lands, in search of a hidden treasure. All amid betrayal of love, friendship and family. As a result, the survival of a people, culture and history hangs perilously in the balance.

Defo based on the Benin Kingdom and Edo/Bini people
