Not an excuse. I'd never make an excuse for that. I'm saying treating humans like livestock wasn't really a thing until Chattel slavery. And it downplays the depravity and atrocities of the practitioners of Chattel Slavery.
So blaming the Africans for what the Europeans did isn't really fair. And the concept of Black and White wasn't really a thing yet either. So reducing the slave trade to "they sold their own" when different tribes(or anyone on Earth at the time) didn't have the concept of race that we do today.
If anything focusing the majority of negative attention on Africans let's Europeans off easy.
