Apparently African Albinos are in a bad spot in Africa. Not only do they die young from cancer thanks to the lack of melanin, but are also hunted by crazed witch doctors who use their body parts for strange rituals that supposedly brings good luck.

19 February 2015 – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein today condemned the latest attack against people with albinism in Tanzania that took the form of the “horrific murder and mutilation” of an albino baby and demanded such “terrible” crimes be halted.

“Attacks against people with albinism, which are often motivated by the use of body parts for ritual purposes, have claimed the lives of at least 75 people in Tanzania since 2000 and seem to be on the rise, with at least three incidents over the past two months,” the top UN rights official said in a statement.

Mr. Zeid’s statement came in response to the “horrific murder and mutilation of Yohana Bahati, a one-year-old baby with albinism, in Northern Tanzania.”

He said on Sunday, Yohana was kidnapped from his home by five unidentified men armed with machetes and his mother was badly injured, and his body was found on 17 February, with his arms and legs chopped off.

“Violence and discrimination against people with albinism must be halted,” Mr. Zeid said. “I call on the Tanzanian authorities to swiftly investigate and prosecute perpetrators of this terrible crime and to strengthen its protection measures for people with albinism, particularly in the lead up to general elections in the country.”

His statement comes a day after the top UN official in Tanzania, UN Resident Coordinator Alvaro Rodriguez, expressed concern at the recent abductions of baby boy Yohana and another albino child named Pendo, who has been missing since December. Despite the Government’s efforts, Pendo has not been found.

That's bad enough, but these poor brehs also have to deal with the greatest killer of all: Nature.

But these brutal attacks are not the greatest threat to people with albinism in Africa. They face a slower death from a disease known as the “silent killer”. Without melanin to protect them, they have a much higher risk of getting skin cancer.

“When you have no melanin, no protection, you’re just getting dinged, these insults from the UV radiation, you’re getting it all the time. It’s not just when you’re at the beach,” says Dr Marc Glashofer, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

“The closer to the equator you are, the stronger the Sun, the stronger the rays, the more risk of skin cancer.”

Albinism groups say more than 90% of people with the condition in Africa die before they reach 40-years-old. Mdeka is that age now – and the clock is ticking on his life. Last September the singer needed an operation to remove a melanoma near his left ear. "Sun is our number one enemy," he says.

As for the Haitian part, I can cosign that. A lot of my Haitian homies say people treat them like they have aids which is fukked up. People have a hard enough time as it is in this life, being treated badly for a skin condition shouldn't be one of them.
