people say the african men are accused of behaving inappropriately with women. indian police did practically nothing to help de-escalate this situation.

this seems like pretty common behavior. i have seen several videos of mobs of indians beating men in public over something to do with women. they call it "eve teasing"

i have to say, given the odds against them, those african brehs handled themselves well

This may be true, but I have also heard from people I know in India about these cases where Africans get scapegoated for crimes and then the police target them.

That quote is from when Gandhi was a young man in South Africa, before he started down the activist path, so it doesn't match with the photo, which was when he was a full-time freedom fighter who actively worked with Black civil rights leaders in the US, like Paul Robeson and others. He had repented for his earlier racism.
