Not that I ever had any ambition to be a Supervisor or PM. You know how IT can be, sometimes the Supervisor / PM be the lowest paid and most stressed, especially in Govt Contracting. My title doesn't say Manager, but I'm responsible for everything IT at the site. Servers, backups, patching, restores, accounts, printers, ordering and installing everything IT and the IT budget. We do have a network that handles switches and IPs. The job description didn't really say I would be responsible for so much, but the pay range went from great pay to excellent pay for Louisiana. I chose the middle of the range, but I probably lowballed myself but I'm more than happy with it. This is actually a Hybrid IT/OT position. Are you guys familiar with Operational Technology??

Anyhow, feels good being on the other side. Hearing about the budget, firing procedures. Great thing, I don't really have to answer to anyone hear, my boss sits in Seattle, I don't do a time card, I set my own schedule. I can work from home a lot, I can schedule certain tasks on the weekend or after hours. I have a company card. I have to travel at times and they reimburse me really well. This is actually a dream job, especially here in Louisiana. Before this, I was traveling 150 miles a day and getting half of what I make now. Now I'm making DC money down here. Never dreamed of having a good IT job here in Louisiana. I was getting burnt out with IT and I've been running back and forth to DC for 20 years. Burnt out for real. I was considering going back and this job popped up. Thank God. I'm in a great position financially, damn near saving 5/6k a month. Time to make smart moves and buy land/property.

Oh yea, I got my own office with a locking door. :shaq: I got my Keurig, dumbbells and surround sound in here. Playing that Maxwell Cococure up in here.

When the opportunity to pull it out (pause) arises?
I'm wyldin'. Congrats, man. Ain't nothin' better than being happy at a job you wasn't sure about but stuck with for a minute.
Also, for a young breh (not me) wanting to start/get into IT. What should one take/do/read?
My lil bro wants to switch it up and since he built his first computer, he been leaning towards IT related jobs but needs some direction.

Finally :skip:

Congrats and good luck. I’m ducking management like I’m in the matrix… but writing is on the wall

I use to duck it to. Then I realized I might as well get paid for doing everyone else job. What I realize there is a difference between hard work and pressure. I face pressure now, the work is nothing.:yeshrug:

I just realized that a lot of young cats aren’t being shown and trained to do their damn jobs these days, and that’s the fault of leadership.

But I’ve been a hybrid-manager for a minute. Just not a fan of it. I duck certain certs just because of it too but I might be stuck here as I get older

I rather train

Congrats to you hopefully it’s a chill work environment.

I’d never want to be a PM. The best jobs are the senior individual contributor technical roles (not lead roles). You get paid a lot, just have to be responsible for yourself.

My current role were on our 4th PM in 2.5 years. My previous role I had like 3 task leads in the 3 years I was there. Yeah fukk tha management shyt especially if you’re not technical.

I lead a small team right now and I’m really good at it and haven’t any issues but I’m still looking to going back to be an individual contributor

Even if you've done absolutely nothing wrong, you're going to have a bunch of pissed off cacs working for you eventually. I personally haven't figured out how to deal with this shyt yet but you'll notice how quick they are to undermine your direction or try to find slick ways to throw you under the bus, but the white managers adjacent to you they'll be all buddy buddy with.
