The way you talked about the network, I would spend some time learning the new environment. See how many servers they have and actually check and confirm that backups are happening. As a security engineer, you would be surprised how many orgs say they're doing backups. One org i was doing IR for said they're doing backups and come to found out it hasn't ran successfully since 2019.

And if you're involved in the IT budget, I would check on contracts and licensing.

I’d never want to be a PM. The best jobs are the senior individual contributor technical roles (not lead roles). You get paid a lot, just have to be responsible for yourself.

I feel you but it's different here. This site didn't hire me. Corporate HQ hired me. I don't answer to anyone at the site. I sit at the site and do most of the IT task here, but I'm corporate. My boss is in Seattle. My boss can tell me to go to another site or go to Seattle for months and no one can say anything. I have to tell the site what I'm doing. It's almost like i'm the FBI agent helping a local Police Dept, but HQ owns the site too. They can tell my boss, I'm tell my boss i'm not doing a good job or whatever. But the last guy was horrible and this position has been opened since Febraury.

You're right, something is always broke and we 're always upgrading hardware and software.

Even if things go bad, I don't trip. I've been in IT 20 years and have never felt or got to comfortable. I keep a disaster / recovery plan.

I’m a manager too. I manage all logistics here on Site. I don’t have to manage people, just parts and operations.

CACs can’t tell me anything. My boss is in Texas. I come in when I want and leave when I want. The best of both worlds.

I just applied to a manager spot managing people in Florida with my company though.

I’m trying to come back stateside.
