Compared to other sports where there's an amazement factor whether it be the size, speed, athleticism, or difficulty of the sport.

These dudes aren't big and fast like football players.
Aren't giants with crazy athletic ability like basketball players.
Nothing looks difficult on TV like hitting a baseball.
Its just a blah television product that looks ordinary af.

Hockey will never be popular because its a cold sport that alienates majority of the country, and its dumb expensive to play.

I played both. Basketball is way easier to pick up. You have players like Olajuwon, Embiid and Siakam start ball as teenagers and make it right to the top.

Idk what a kick up is but I can guarantee it doesn't have the amazement factor on TV of a nikka doing this
