So him taking a chance on lying about it would be foolish....

Makes total sense. One of those situations where we need to hear the full context of the conversation and not just a snippet or piece of the interview.

it's possible for a malfunctioning gun to go off by just racking a round....

I've seen it happen
This is a western. They were using revolvers. If the hammer malfunctioned, that should have been the 1st statement released and would have been obvious.

I thought it was strange that he shot people not on screen. Like why was he even pointing in that general direction.
