He just scored goal #891 against the Carolina Hurricanes in the second period. The Canes now lead 5-1 over the Caps late in the 3rd period. He’s 3 goals away from tying Gretzky’s record and 4 goals away from breaking it. His team, the Washington Capitals has 7 more games left in their season. He won’t be able to reach the 900-goal mark this season unfortunately (maybe next season) but he will have enough time left to tie or break Wayne Gretzky’s goalscoring record( 894 goals)

But if he didn’t miss 16 games from Nov. 21-Dec. 23 because of a fractured left fibula, he would’ve broken the record already and reached easily the 900 goal plateau. Bad luck for him as Ovechkin has been rarely injured in his career. Despite his physical and intense style of play as a power forward scoring winger, he miraculously found a way to avoid the injury bug somehow until this year.

Despite missing a month due to injuries, Alexander Ovechkin still leads the Capitals with 39 goals in 58 games this season and he is only one goal away from reaching 40 goal mark for the 14th time in his 20 NHL seasons, which would increase his League-record total.

You mean 892. He got 891 yesterday.

2 away from tying and 3 from a new record.

Goals from age 30 and on:

Ovechkin - 416
Gretzky - 188

Crazy to think of the ground that Ovechkin had to make up on Gretzky in his 30s.

Ovechkin's 416 goals after the age of 30 would rank him at #98 overall for career NHL goals.

Gretzky had 706 goals before the age of 30 and only 188 goals from 30 years old until he retired at 38.

Most NHL goals scored by players over the age of 30.

Ovechkin is among elite company. All of these players on this list are first ballot NHL Hall of Famers:

Alexander Ovechkin - 416
Gordie Howe - 415
Phil Esposito - 409
Johnny Bucyk - 374
Teemu Selanne - 338
Brett Hull - 328
Marcel Dionne - 321
Mark Messier - 314
Jaromir Jagr - 306
Mike Gartner - 304

That's my post 2005 GOAT.:to:.

Once he breaks the record, it's time for him to go join Jagr.:pachaha:.
The two lockouts of 2004-05 and 2012, and the COVID era of 2020-21 probably prevented him from scoring 950 goals at least. I don’t know if he could have ever scored 1000 goals, a feat that no NHL forward has done ever. I dont believe that he will score 1000 goals because he told the hockey media a while ago that he expects to retire after his current contract with the capitals comes to an end. So he will announce his retirement in the summer of 2026? In 2026-27, he will be 41 already. At that point of his career. he won’t be as good as he is right now anymore. Father Time always wins.

Alex Ovechkin is signed to a 5 year, $47,500,000 contract with a cap hit of $9,500,000 per season, currently playing for the Washington Capitals. His contract was signed on July 27, 2021, and expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, when Ovechkin will be 40 years old.

What is most impressive is that this isn't some player just compiling stats late in his career. He is extremely productive at this stage in his career. It's actually pretty mind-boggling, especially with the style he plays.
