And this is the biggest problem with the US team ( Canada has this problem as well)

Soccer is a sport for rich kids in the states and very little is invested in the talented kids that don't come from privileged backgrounds.

Until US Soccer changes this, nothing will Change at all.

I watched my 7 year old play on a team which destroyed their opponents 9-0 last Sunday (lil niglet had a Jets joke he threw at me laughing to himself when describing the opposing team ) ....and yet I kept thinking to myself...is this as good as it gets here in the U.S.? Is this helping his soccer future? Are any of these kids on a track play at an elite level in the future?

The Women's team only advantage is that we allow women to play sports here and give them support.

Other countries play the game way better than we do but the women have numbers and infrastructure.

Most of the best players in the world are not what anyone would describe as amazing athletes. They are very small in stature and low to the ground.

Never in my mind would I think I'd say the world, "I agree with The Red Headed Menace," but he really did nail that.

Sunil Gulati at the top needs to go. The whole pay to play infrastructure in this country is the problem. To play competitive we need to be bringing in the best players and have them taught at a very young age by the best coaches we possibly can.

The MLS has improved the quality of play in this country. People don't want to admit it, but it has helped. Problem is the MLS is also helping every other soccer country in the region (minus Mexico and Liga MX). The smaller Concacaf countries players are growing to be better players playing in a tougher league then the leagues in their native lands. With that said though. The MLS is nothing more then a bottom feeder league for the bigger leagues around the world.

I do see that the US is trying to get stronger in the youth development. Most MLS teams now have academies where kids come and play against other top teams in the country and region. The Seattle Sounders U-14 Academy team just won the 2017 Youdan Trophy in Sheffield, England which hosts some of the big name teams through out the world. My son turns 4 on Wednesday and I'm about to try and get him enrolled in the Sounders academy as early as I can. He's been play with me for a few years now.



Agree 100%. Was going to name drop most of those players and say we have some very young talented players playing overseas. Now we just need to start seeing more and more of them replacing guys like Graham Zusi and Michael Bradley.

none of this changes as long as you force players to go to college.

Let me start out by saying "Yes, Football is king in this country."

Now that that's out in the open and has been stated. What he said wasn't wrong though.

The sport is growing and becoming more popular here in this country. MLS attendance has grown since the early 2000s. The average attendance of 21,692 in 2016 was a 57% increase over the 13,756 average in 2000. The total attendance of 7,375,144 in 2016 is more than triple the 2,215,019 total of 2002.

Investors are recognizing the growth and the potential also. Adidas and MLS just signed a $700 million dollar deal to make Adidas the official supplier of MLS merchandise. Back in 2010 the deal was for $200 million. In 2011 Fox outbid ESPN and NBC for the U.S. English-speaking rights–Sports Business Journal reported the total rights fee to be between $400 million to $500 million.

According to data from TicketIQ, the overall secondary market for MLS tickets has grown 300 percent since 2011, more than any major sport, as measured by annual gross sales across the league.

Target dropped Nascar to become one of the main sponsors of the MLS. It also is paying Minnesota United to be the official jersey sponsor.

In 2016 around 3 million kids play in U.S. Youth Soccer leagues. Among 12- to 17-year-olds, MLS is now more popular than MLB. In fact, among that age group only basketball is more popular.

This year, over 60 professional teams will play in the USA. There are also 12 cities currently willing to pay $150 million to get their city a MLS franchise.

if you ask me, more KIDS always played soccer growing up than I knew who played anything else in the suburbs...but theres no real outlets for talent growth, especially with the FORCED collegiate filter.

Dude, thanks. I help run a rec center and I floated the idea out to the board members and they seem keen on it. Especially considering, how cheap the sport is compared to others. I think by Feb I should have a solid foundation down so I can pitch to some Board members and apply for the 501(c)3.

Those players are really athletic though, they're balance, pace and quick feet isn't something you can just teach. There's different types of athleticism, it's not all height and strength.
