From 2001-2007, Alicia Keys was reigning over everybody in R&B. All things considered, only Mary came close. Alicia had it all: arguably two classic albums (her first two), classic songs, accolades, etc. Not only that, but she still had that Hip Hop vibe to her music even though it crossed over. She had a soulful sound with a Hip Hop edge. When Alicia came out, she was the dream girlfriend (fine, but carried herself like one of the homies, still feminine, coukd hold her own, and talented). She easily had one of the most incredible runs in modern R&B (specifically post 90's).

I just feel like a lot of Alicia Keys songs were overplayed, but not really all that good... I mean they were straight... But she aint got nothin on Jill first album or Badu whole discography.

And honestly most of her songs annoy the shyt out of me when I hear them.... Unlike Badu shyt which gives me chills no matter how many times i hear it.....

Every album she put out had that one song that would drive you nuts.

Fallin was cool initially, but then they’d play it every 10 minutes. I remember every Funk Flex set for whatever reason would have that song. He coulda been done playing Ante Up, he’d follow it up with Fallin.

If I Ain’t Got You = cool song, cool video, which got really annoying.

No One = when the fall off started.

Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart = :beli:

But she drove Empire State Of Mind into the ground

Girl On Fire = :camby:

Even removing those songs, Alicia still has album cuts and hits that didn't get anywhere near the amount of airplay as those songs that are still dope. Out off the R&B crossover Pop singers from last decade, I would still put A. Keys over Beyonce and Rihanna in regard to having omnipresence on the radio. These songs still sound great:

Unbreakable
Draggin Days
Slow Down
Karma
The Life

Prettt much the whole Diary of Alicia Keys album.

remember when rick james said shesucked? :russ:

“She calls her album, ‘Songs In A Minor,’ and all of the songs are in E and D,” he explained. “I don’t think she knows her grammatic skill, personally. I think she’s ‘The Gong Show.’ When she did the Donny Hathaway song in front of millions of people and fu**ed it up, that just goes to show you right there what’s going on…What about Rachelle Ferrell, or Lalah Hathaway? What about all these serious bytches that can really sing? Alicia Keys? Because Clive Davis eats the best See’s Candies and gives the best whatever, and wants to show Whitney [Houston] that she ain’t sh**, yeah, he’s going to put his effort in Alicia Keys.”

Most of her best cuts are non singles. Her fall off aligned with changing production teams.

She used Krucial Keys for her first four albums. She didn't really fall off until album four. It wasn't even due to switching production teams, she and Krucial Keys kept trying to remake "No One" by album four and at that point, the Hip Hop Soul vibe was completely gone in their production. I do agree that most of her best songs are non singles.

Didnt know that, i thought they split after primarily after the 2nd album. I did like most of her 3rd album though, low key I thought Amy Whinehous may have influenced the sound a bit.

How is Alicia Keys overrated? I don't really recall anyone saying Alicia was some GOAT or was even putting her up there with Aretha Franklin or legends like that. I mean, during the era of discussion, Alicia was playing multiple instruments (mainly the piano and Rhodes). She made great music, but indeed fell off after admitting to purposely writing songs out of her vocal range.
