Since Prometheus, my thinking is that being a dumb ass is a part of the job description.
  • Being sloppy
  • Being lazy
  • Defying common sense
  • Dumb science and engineering in general
It's the opposite of competence porn, it's incompetence porn.

And it's at the meta level too. It was meta decision to make those characters kids trapped inside of adult bodies. It's giving us a lot of incredible acting....but they're convenienty dumb asses as a result.

But I'll be here next week watching the same thing.

Alien actually precedes cyberpunk. Mind you the first movie is set entirely on a spaceship so the cyberpunk elements may align now, but they didn't exist at the time

So now that you have a show like AE that takes place on earth, I think what we have now is a framework to flesh out certain elements. For example we see Morrow talking to Yutanei and her whole setup looks like some Ghost In The Shell shyt

Its very possible that Alien is one of the pioneers of what eventually became cyberpunk and that's why it clicks into place so well

Personally I'd say the most distinctly cyberpunk element about Alien, outside of the grimy tech aesthetic, is the existence of these hyper exploitative tech mega corps. And now here we are, in the age of Amazon and Meta :francis:

Alien may precede 80's Cyberpunk (e.g. Neuromancer, Max Headroom, etc), but it doesn't precede what we're calling "Space Incompetence Porn" :

This movie came out in 1972

Blade Runner is what set the on screen bar for “Cyberpunk”, but Alien did have some Cyberpunk-ish themes and aesthetic. I wonder how Alien would look if Ridley Scott directed Alien after Blade Runner.

That's why I said Alien, despite being pre cyberpunk, aligns with what eventually came down the line

I personally consider Neuromancer the birth of cyberpunk but I don't argue when nikkas say Blade Runner

Oh I was just reinforcing your point. I also consider it a precursor, from the outfits and rugged complexity of the ship systems, to the WY corporation’s lordship.

Damn, that was definitely one one of the best Episodes. They really shot this series like a Film because after that episode, I wanted to see the entire mission and how many people they lost trying to get those specimens. I know some are wondering. "Why wasn't this season a show about the Maginot Mission and them picking up the Alien Specimens and the end of the season would be crashing on Earth". That would have been a good show too. Maybe we get a prequel book or series about their mission. I guess the issue is it would be too much like "Prometheus" or the original "Alien" and the whole point of this show is to have the Alien being on Earth.

But I loved the whole investigation and how the ship fell apart. They really had you guessing who did what. They made that Asian dude look so guilty, lol. Also the episode really developed and gave the back story to Murrow's character. Like Ripley he was hoping to return to his daughter but was out there so long. Basically he was a strong ally to the original Yutani Owner not the young granddaughter. He did actually finally meet with Her and no she didn't off him. Instead he basically told her to give him a chance to get the specimens and take out Boy Cavalier. My theory is he needed more resources but he also wanted to make sure he could complete the job before seeing her.

That scene in City was very Cyberpunkish and had a Blade Runner feel. Come to find out Boy Cavalier was the mastermind the whole time trying to steal the specimens. Wayland-Yutani was dealing with disgruntled employees. But again good episode. Very disgusting and sci fi, lol. That Eye-Alien was wild man. I honestly enjoy the creativity of the show. Including the other aliens was a great concept and gives them more to build on. I definitely see this series ending in a big cliffhanger. But dope episode, Murrow is a really good character. Smart to have him as a lead. 3 Episodes left and the season will be over. But there's an argument that was the best episode with the first two. Boy Cavalier made a bad mistake, this isn't going to end well.

As usual I'm a week behind.

Episode 5 was phenomenal. Of course you can argue the crew had the collective IQ of a bucket of shrimp, and I wouldn't disagree. But I'll be god damned if that wasn't an entertaining hour of television.

Morrow is the best character. I was wondering when Noah Hawley would add some of his usual ("Fargo", "Legion") flair to the direction of the show, and the scenes at the end with Morrow wiping the alien drool/tears away didn't disappoint. Also the eye ball thing crawling across the camera was cool.

I dunno me personally I love this show, flaws and all.

JBO regular confirmed.

"Blade Runner" did pretty much single-handedly birth how cyberpunk looks but (and you may be aware of this) the look of "Blade Runner" was heavily influenced by Kowloon Walled City:
