Nah we suffer b/c we keep acting in the same way as Adam and Eve.
We used to discuss stuff like this in undergrad. From my readings I've gathered that God is a completion of all dualities and existence in life. Pure utter being complete and eternal, a perfection that is complete yet continually transcends any human conception of it that is personal yet also detached. And even this explanation can be subject to critique b/c of God's continually transcendent nature.
Anyhoo apparently we suffer not b/c God is punishing us but b/c we keep acting in ways that provide natural and supernatural consequences. God creates and allows the created things to act according to their natures and experience the consequences.
This means that apparently even the gates to hell are locked from the inside.
The ultimate purpose in life is to find our way back to our true nature which is divine. The more we act in negative or sinful ways, the longer it takes to transform into our divine infinite. Some people might take an eternity (hell) while others are there now.
Either way that whole "every knee shall bow" and "every tongue shall confess" bit is the realization that eventually we all come back to what we are.
But yeah, supposedly every path is a search for our divinity even the ones that choose no path at all. But apparently some roads are longer and harder than others. Religion merely provided some examples of different paths you can take.
