Only in 1993 due to his MVP and the Suns success. No other years was he second best.
Karl Malone was top 5 in MVP voting NINE times and Charles was top 5 only FOUR times. From 1985 to his retirement , when it came MVP voting, only Malone was second to Jordan, winning 2 MVPs over Jordan during his reign. If anything Malone was second best,his stats and team record backs it up.

1989-90 was maybe the toughest MVP race ever. It's pretty amazing looking back at how many players had great years. Look at those candidates and their seasons:

David Robinson won Rookie of the Year, he averaged 24 PPG on 53% FG with 12 RPG and 4 BPG...and the Spurs went from 21-61 to 56-26. He finished SIXTH in MVP voting. That's how strong that year was.
Anyway, Barkley ranks higher than Iverson all-time and for peak play. Dude was ridiculously efficient to go with being a great scorer and rebounder, and good passer too. Unfortunately he was inconsistent on defense due to his laziness. He once said "it's not that I can't play defense, I just sometimes don't want to". But he was still a hell of a player when you look at the whole impact.
Charles Barkley ranks higher than Kobe Bryant in all-time greatness, despite Bryan't 5 titles to Barkley's zero. That would have been a better debate, particularly with the Kobe stans here who would lose their shyt over such a claim.
Iverson (while clearly the greater cultural impact) isn't even close.

I loved AI as a player, really changed the game in terms of style, attitude, gamestyle, etc...
But Charles in his prime was a BEAST. he was up there as one of the fastest, strongest players in the league and also one of the most skilled. He was like a fatter Lebron that couldn't avoid injuries and was actually shorter.
AI was tough man. Not even 6foot but would dunk on cats, cross them up, shoot over them, arguably one of the fastest players to ever play in the game, went against the best. And always fought against the odds. I actually felt like near the end of his career he was blackballed from the NBA which kinda humbled him.

If it wasn't for MJ Barkley would have 2 rings at least be in the top 10 consideration, he was that good. That man could drop 40 like it was nothing.
