edit: my answers are coming from shyt the creator of the manga has said and the manga itself; theirs are coming from the show...i'll take the person who created it over fans like myself...but since yall doubt me so much, i'll provide proof:

things the vol shows:

1. that those in between names didn't exist and the only thing that mattered was ss1, ss2, and ss3....goku powers up to look just like the big muscled trunks which was stronger than a normal ss1, yet all it is referred to is still ss1...more proof: everyone tells goku and gohan they're stronger, but they are still only referred to as ss1...that is until gohan officially displays ss2, which is later...also shows that trunks wouldn't have beat cell even if he was faster because he wasn't ss2, so he wasn't strong enough...[another link that shows ss1,2, and 3 is all that mattered: http://www.mangahere.com/manga/dragon_ball/v40/c002/3.html ]

2. it shows that goku was at ss2, he just never displayed it (shows it more in vol 34)...the creator was passing the torch to gohan, so he never displayed goku's full strength....and since he was passing the torch from goku to gohan, he wrote it in a way so that goku made it seem gohan was stronger than himself, even though it wasnt true...he kept the writing true to goku's character while doing that...that's why goku fought cell first and that's why cell never beat goku, goku quit...the creator had him throw the fight to make gohan look stronger cause he was gonna make gohan the focus of the series...when he had goku sacrifice himself, he figured that would be the end of it, but fans reactions and complaining changed that....that's why after the cell saga, goku becomes the focus again and gohan was neutered....

3. like myself and @Jplaya2023 said: they did everything as ss but sleep...there's a panel where goku says this to gohan..

4. vegeta was always playing catch-up to goku; vegeta even says so....to go with that: just proves that goku trained harder than vegeta...goku trained from the time he was a kid till his death and even in death....vegeta didn't start training until after frieza...here and there he went ape shyt with the training, but doing over the top shyt for a short period of time doesn't compare to doing training your whole life consistently...even more proof he wasn't seeing goku: http://www.mangahere.com/manga/dragon_ball/v34/c006/10.html

^^^^link to an interview with the creator where he says he was gonna make gohan the lead after the cell saga....he doesn't say why he changed his mind and felt goku was better for the lead, but the reason was because of the outcry from fans....that's why goku was written the way he was at the end of the cell saga...

Since there is no goku raditz never comes to earth and piccolo enslaves the humans.

Frieza get's the DB's wishes for eternal life and rules the universe.

no red ribbon army to create cell, no majin buu because there would be no humans on earth to fill his meter, no future trunks as vegeta never smashes bulma.

Ya know... if there was no Goku, nobody would know about the Dragonballs so Frieza may end up being wished away on Namek

Yeah, so don't you think if they can hide their power then that makes it pointless to measure them? Same thing. And you're saying exactly what I'm getting at. Frieza is probably more powerful then Broly and probably just that much of a better fighter than him. Frieza would win. Period. Even if he had to send in the Ginyu's, then Zarbon, then the rest of his army. Even if Broly murked them Frieza would come forth and kill Broly. One of the things that got Frieza into trouble on Namek was all that talking. Frieza isn't talking with Broly, cause Broly isn't talking. Which leaves one last thing for him to do and that's just blow the shyt out of Broly. The only thing I could see possibly stopping Frieza is his fear of SSJs.
