They hijacked the movement. It’s not a recent thing. Afro Latinidad has existed.
I mean the
movement. Not "Afro-Latinidad" itself however one can argue that term is recent itself since real Black Latinos don't identify as such in their own country but just BLACK or even African(like you said before which I found to be very true).
Here's the thing and my real point. This "movement" was never "hijacked", and most of the people apart of it are Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Now this is going to offend some Dominicans here especially those who I am cool with but truth be told
conscious Blackness is relatively new to islander Hispanics like Puerto Ricans and especially Dominicans outside of Afro-Cubans. Of course you obviously had Black Dominicans and Ricans who identified as Black but it was never linked to consciousness and especially not anything via political. But was mostly stemmed on PHENOTYPE.
@IllmaticDelta addressed this many times.
Afro-Cubans on the other hand always had a
conscious Black identity due to being
minorities including mulattos(unlike with DR and PR). Them, Afro-Colombians, Afro-Panamanians, Afro-Venezuelans and Afro-Brasilians are similar to Afro-Cubans. I have addressed this before and said that those type of Afro-Latinos never had issues identifying as Black but instead proudly identify as Black especially Black Cubans, Panamanians and Colombians.
Fact is(and this may offend some Dominicans)... Dominicans(whether 'fully' Black or mulatto) and some extent Ricans are relatively new to the concept of "conscious" Blackness unlike the rest of the Afro-latin word. They get "woke" when they come to the states. Now there are "woke" Dominicans on the island but they are a minority. I'm just going by what I observe.
