they were already getting into the grocery business....they have pickup kiosks at grocery stores: order your shyt online, have people there shop for you, and you just pick it up....with buying an actual grocery store chain, they cutting out a lot of other middle men aka other grocery stores...the people that already use amazon and that shopping option, will just go to whole foods now mostly...
amazon wants to get in the grocery business so buying whole foods cut out a lot of steps: no designing and building stores, distribution and permits/regulations. not a bad move. you get whole foods shopping experience with good amazon prices.
