The VA move is a pretty scary thing. Bezos has shown a propensity to work closely with the feds and give them whatever they want. Amazon is quickly becoming the governments 'private' data arm.

They were losing ground to Microsoft in that space. MS is currently building out in Reston iirc. They were always going to be close to federal government.

That said, I thought you favored small government and the privatization of govwrent resources. This should be a win for you.

For most people, though, the narrative doesn’t matter as much as the economics. And landing a large, subsidized project won’t do much to change a state or city’s trajectory.



That is because the economy moves quicker than politicians. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. lost 23 million jobs last year and added 24 million jobs. That’s a turnover of one out of every five jobs. This Amazon project, the largest single business expansion project we have seen, promises 50,000 jobs and may take years to develop even if the company meets its projections. Big developments don’t matter much when even such a large project as this would replace less than half a percent of annual job loss.

Luring large projects with taxpayer dollars comes with costs that outweigh any good the new project may bring. One recent estimate by the Upjohn Institute in Michigan estimates that state and local incentive programs nationwide offered up $45 billion in 2015 alone. Programs that ultimately confiscate money from many people and give it to a select few typically just transfer wealth rather than create it.
