You said creoles have nothing to do with Portuguese

not understanding how anyone could misinterpret that post as i understood you were comparing creoles in the states to creoles in jamaica and how their identities relate to their respective understandings of blackness.
but even still, the claim that there is no connection between louisiana creoles and the portuguese is still not wholly accurate.
as you know, the
original criollos were created from the portuguese colonizing the kingdoms of kongo, ndongo, and mbundu which are the present day counties of angola and congo. many of the slaves that were taken to the colonies, as well as the caribbean, and brazil were already creolized when they arrived (spoke portuguese or a pidgin and were christian). in fact, many accounts of slaves arriving in virginia and south carolina attest to many speaking portuguese. there is a group that arose from this population called the "melungeons" who, to this day, claim they are the descendants of africans and portuguese.
and in new orleans, the predominant slaves that arrived were also taken from the kongo, ndongo, and mbundu kingdoms. it was the same in haiti and other parts of the caribbean. however, they quicky subsumed into the prevailing french culture. then you had the massive haitian creole influx. "creole" then became synonymous with frenchness and french culture here in the states. however, there is still and underlying portuguese genetic component. many louisiana creoles have done dna testing and many have revealed inheriting smaller but significant portuguese dna.
creole american ancestry in general is very mixed up. not even to mention the spanish, native, and german influences.
I wish people would take more Africana studies classes in college. The Creoles were sent to Haiti during the slave trade but Creoles were created by the assimilation of the Portuguese into West Africa where white Portuguese assimilated and married Black women which they named them “Signares”. Those Portuguese men and black women union led to the Creoles.
Louisiana creoles are an interesting breed. There are combination of West Africans who were “Seasoned” in the West Indies than returned and the children of the Signares.
Louisiana creoles maybe the deepest ties to West Africa and the Caribbeans.
