Before we start thinking that we all lost because we don't live in a completely oversized house that alienates us from the rest of humanity, let's stop and think about what makes this house so important to any of us: It's status. But how badly do we need a gigantic house to prove it? I mean, this thing is inconveniently huge. I would rather own a smaller house and a few kick ass vacation homes for the same amount of money. I could also do things like reinvest the money into projects for things that I believed in an make a name for myself on the philanthropy circuit. I could also invest it in myself and go traveling, develop tons of cool skills, or just party my ass off.
The point is, is that this house is only worth what you're willing to give up for it. Are you willing to shell out 200 million for it? Not me. There are other things that I'd rather have. There are other ways to prove my status like career success, things that I learn on my own, and the people that I generally surround myself with. This house... it just speaks to the worst traits of humanity to me: waste, greed, and lack of good priorities.
