:to:Sad to see that their relationship fell apart, we missed out on many potential classics if they'd patched it up in between that long time period.
Most definitely, the talent between them two is crazy. I wish D and Lauren Hill made more tracks together. D is in my top 3 favs of all time artists, I still haven’t heard anything that sounds like Brown Sugar or Voodoo.

That mumbling on records is trash if we keeping it 100%

Can’t even make out some of what a nikka be saying

Brown Sugar has the songs, elite songwriting,
a better craft and mastered style of sound etc

I get what he was trying to do with both Voodoo and Black Messiah but bruh ain’t no Sly Stone, Bobby Womack, Eddie Hazel or Prince.

And that’s cool, he’s D’Angelo.

I just think it’s clear he’s one of those artists that really needs an executive producer and a few co writers to really help him remain focus

It ain’t “trash” when the rest of us liked. Voodoo still the stronger project.

There’s a audience for it, no doubt

But Brown Sugar is his magnum opus

Like I said, I get what he was trying to do on both his Voodoo and Black Messiah but when you listen to Sly’s Theres’s A Riot Goin’ On and then Voodoo and Black Messiah, it pales in comparison

Shuggie Otis’ Information Inspiration is another great album

Voodoo is his magnum opus. That’s why it’s as celebrated and respected as much as it is. That’s why it has so much acclaim.

I’ve listened to those albums. There’s a reason Brown Sugar is respected as one of the best albums of the 90’s and Voodoo is respected as one of the greatest of albums of all time.

I love brown sugar and Black Messiah, but Voodoo got WAY more love and play in real time.

Different strokes for different folks

I like Brown Sugar far more than both Voodoo and Black Messiah

He mastered that R&B jazzy Marvin Gaye esque sound far better than he mastered the Sly Stone sound Riot sound to me

And to be brutally honest, Voodoo got a lot of attention once that Untitled video dropped and women ate that shyt up

Which is what had him retreating because he ain’t like or want that type of attention

He wanted to be respected as an artist and not a Chip n Dales’s dancer

:why:
The music of Voodoo is what gained him that respect as a renowned creative lol. No different strokes, that’s fact. Brown sugar was contained and contemporary. Brown sugar hadn’t mastered anything, as D hadn’t mastered himself. It was his later work that brought him into his own.

Voodoo reached way higher, with more depth. It’s considered a masterwork, and was inspired by so much more than Sly. It literally became an inspiration to singers, musicians, and writers in its own right. Voodoo is more Marvin, and the “Jazzy” sound is more than you liked on BS.

D was already considered a sex symbol when BS dropped. Untitled did nothing but bring back those same Aunties, plus more. The rest of the Album grew his fans aside from the video. You talking like we weren’t alive and functioning for both rollouts and releases.

:manny:
It’s fine if you like Brown Sugar more, it’s a dope album. It’s better than most of its contemporaries, but it’s not D’s best work.

I said different strokes for different for folks in regards to if you like Voodoo more than Brown Sugar

I ain’t arguing that. I’m too hungry right now

We can happily disagree and have a difference of opinion on which album is better and that’s ok

but I will say, in real time that Untitled video is what gained him a lot of attention he didn’t want any part of. That’s a fact

Edit

Did you really say Voodoo is more Marvin? Nah man. lol

Brown Sugar is more Marvin

Voodoo was the start of him branching into Hendrix and Sly and then he went further with that with Black Messiah along with Shuggie Otis, Parliament Funkadelic and Brian Wilson and many other influences

Tony Williams is another influence too

If BS is any Marvin at all, it’s pre- “What’s going on”, singing the standards Marvin. Voodoo is a lot more of the Marvin that’s free flowing making whole albums out of continuous jam sessions.

It doesn’t matter if it brought him attention he didn’t want. He was getting it when Brown Sugar came out. I saw him tour it live.

:manny:
I agree that we’re not going to change each other’s minds. I agree that’s there’s nothing wrong with having a preference, but you’re the one who called a timeless, and internationally beloved work of art “trash” because you didn’t like it.

I disagree with a lot of what your saying and I’m too tired to keep going back and forth but if you read my previous, I what I said specifically is all there

Some of my words you’ve twisted but it’s all good

I hear what you saying

Only thing I will say, it is well known that D’ resented and hated Untitled for a long time, the type of attention he got for that video wore very heavy on him. Like fukked with his mental health for a long time. That’s well known.

He literally told Questlove “'I'm going to go in the woods, drink some hooch, grow a beard, and get fat.”

He didn’t like how women were more concerned with his new look than his music once that Untitled video dropped.

He was popular when he dropped BS but he was not the sex symbol that he became during Voodoo and specially once that Untitled video came out

I wasn’t trying to shyt on Voodoo, I like the album but it’s not my favorite D’Angelo album. I was merely given my honest opinion

If cats arent messing with D's style on Messiah than they dont rock with George Clinton or Sly Stone's product neither :mjlol: :manny:

You can like D’s style on Messiah but also think it’s not as great as the original style of the influencers (Sly Stone) that came before it and that’s fine too
