Shame this guy was paying 400 a month for monitoring.

Patterson was on house arrest, as first reported by the 8 News Now Investigators. He was set to go on trial in April of 2024 on nine felony charges related to sex crimes against children, according to Clark County District Court records.

Patterson’s bail was lowered to $10,000 with high-level electronic monitoring by Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Diana Sullivan last December. He was ordered to surrender his passport and stay away from children. He posted bond by working with a Las Vegas bail company. Two months prior, a pro-tem judge had set Patterson’s bail at $100,000 with the same conditions. Court records did not show any restrictions on firearms.

Court records revealed that Patterson was charged with nine felony charges, including five counts of lewdness with a child under the age of 14, two counts of sexual assault with a minor under 16 years of age, one count of lewdness with a child under the age of 16, and one count of first-degree kidnapping of a minor. The crimes were alleged to have taken place from 2013 to 2022.

Patterson knew all of the alleged victims, according to court transcripts.

they literally let him pay his way out of jail. :mindblown:

you can point out whatever heinous crime you want believing it's OK to price-gouge people awaiting trial but people who are a threat to the community or members of their household shouldn't be released in the first place.

You aren’t an advocate for bail?

i'm an advocate for no-cash bail for those accused of non-violent crimes. I've never supported people being released from jail only if they can afford to pay.

Y'all super knowledgeable people are surprised the government isn't giving out gps units used to track criminals for free? :skip:

No.
We're disgusted that people are being charged $400 a month for a GPS tracker service when there are GPS tracker services that literally cost $8.00 per month.

It's a piece of government property, and they use it to make sure you don't flee. They aren't going to lease it to you for the same price as the $8 per month one, that's common sense. You think they're just gonna hand them a Tile tracker and tell them to keep it in their pocket?

I don't understand this logic.

The technology in a tile tracker and the technology in an ankle bracelet is the same.
Even on the higher end, GPS trackers that go on cars run about $25.

If you really think there's a justifiable argument that there's not a closer middle ground from $25 to $400, there's really nothing else to say.

You think every state/city/county has a uniform monthly cost too? Some are less, some might be more. That addresses your "middle ground" argument.
But if you're genuinely "disgusted" that the government isn't giving you a piece of equipment that they're hoping you won't run away with or damage, which is part of your criminal punishment and condition of release, for the low low, you're right, there is nothing else to be said. :skip:

theres nothing special about the device that warrants the fees charged, in 2022, 1,127 individuals in texas cut off their ankle monitors.

The more concerning thing is that you are ideally trying to rehabilitate and reintegrate this recently freed prisoner. One who has spent an extended amount of time with no economic activity.

Giving them an immediate debt when they will obviously struggle to meet employment and housing guidlenes of the parole/probation is counterintuitive. It's silly rules and charges like this that create reoffenders and prison overcrowding.

If there must be a charge, ideally it would be delayed or deferred a 2-3 years until they are on their feet. Or perhaps the charge should be progressive like the tax system , where former inmates with resources pay more than those with little or nothing to their name who would pay substantially less

It's for sure a scam, because if you can't afford the monthly fee, you get violated. I wasn't saying it's right, but don't understand people not understanding that the government is going to overcharge, because that's what they do.
