A hustler with a 9-5. Sounds like you hustled backwards.

a hustler without a job is a hustler that draws attention. but that's not the purpose of this thread. it's about how background checks are hindering the mobility of black men who want a second chance at a positive and productive life.

Criminal records dont hinder white guys. They have you where they want you. Move to africa, go back to hustlin, work construction, start your own business, buy a new identity or settle for 12 dollar an hour jobs. You phased yourself out of a large chunk of the job market when you got caught.

i don't deny that my actions led to this, but -- AGAIN -- you're missing the point. if i truly want a second chance at contributing to society on a positive level, shouldn't i have an opportunity to prove myself instead of having a background check's results thwart that goal? why should i and other black men with criminal records see our livelihood threatened because of mistakes made in the past. does america not believe in second chances? is it not obvious that diminished opportunities due to past criminality will only lead to future criminality? is that logic lost on you?

i don't know if you're white or just a house ******, but your perspective is fukked up.

Well, businesses will abide by hiring laws and allow ex-felons to apply for jobs, but if you got a crazy crime on your record, your application goes into the bushes unless you are just mowing a lawn or emptying trash.
The only option is to get good at a hard labor type job and then try to create your own business based on your experience. Car washing, landscaping, janitorial services.
You can also try to become an expatriot and start over in a foreign land. You'll start at ground zero but won't have a criminal background.

You should but you live in America and were born with cards stacked against you because of your race. You should be allowed to have a second chance but its kinda like dating a woman that you really dont like. She cooks cleans and obeys you so you treat her basic but you're waiting for her to breath wrong so you can tell her to kick rocks. Thats what happened to you.

Got 3 misdemeanors. I've been perfect for jobs and been turned down. Usually because I downplay em.

For cacs, any type of violence or stealing and they're like :merchant:

so i'm basically fukked? there isn't a period that the record is wiped like how your credit report becomes clean after a number of years? damn. these businesses stay giving me the :childplease: after they run that background check. what's crazy is, i'm a college educated and skilled brother who's also in graduate school. but i figure that i'm just wasting money on this graduate degree if they're not going to give even that any consideration because of my record.

and white people wonder why we don't like them.

You're gonna have to either start your own business and get it on your own... or just accept working them minimum wage jobs (and even half of THEM don't hire ex-felons). There's really no middle ground for you.

I had/have the same problem. I had a couple of felonies on my record from when I was 21, but I was able to get them off of my record once I turned 25 (took me until 26 to do it though). It really set me back; I had a business before I got locked up (but had already sold it) and was in college, after I got that record though all that went away, and I've been working bullshyt jobs ever since (I probably could have built my way up in one of them but I don't have the patience).

What I wish I would have done is just started my own business at the time because even though I would have struggled a lot more financially (at first) I would be in a better position today, but the time has passed now so no point in looking back. Especially considering my probation officer was cool as fukk and she pretty much never bothered me at all except for three-month checkups.

Edit: My felonies were theft related though so obviously no one was in a hurry to hire me. I've seen dudes with drug related cases have an easier go of it (though not "easy" at all).
