No, I havn't done stand up but I can entertain a group of friends. It's good advice. It's the same as getting rejected by a bunch of girls to get over the fear of rejection. People who have less inhibitions are easier to get along with, they don't care about being embarrassed like other people are, they've been there and done that. They know how to handle an awkward situation. Being on stage, having everyone look at you and laugh at you or with you is the same pressure, to a higher degree, as dancing on the street drunk in front of random people. Experience and failure are the best teachers.

May as well do it in the training room, before you take it on an actual stage.

Real talk Aisha Tyler talks about what it's like to be a comedian, be on stage for the first time, etc often during interviews on her Girl on guy podcast. It's usually a pretty good listen if you are into the podcast thing.

Don't get caught stealing dead comedian's jokes and then go crying on YouTube talmbout, "B-b-but it was an homage. :sadcam:"

I think, just don't steal jokes PERIOD. All the joke thieves get exposed and even if they are actually funny and have funny routines most of the time, once word gets out you steal other people's routines, you will lose respect and everyone will refer to you as a thief/loser.

Carlos Mencia and Denis Leary are good examples. They can actually be pretty funny at times(IMO at least) but everyone knows they steal jokes and once people find out, the respect is not there any more. Denis Leary is probably be the most blatant. Not only did he steal Bill Hicks jokes, he stole his whole persona.

One of my boy is a stand-up comedian out in LA. He just started not too long ago but his name's Myke Wright.

He was doing sketch comedy on Youtube, photography, and graphic design. Always been a funny dude. Just decided to move out west to do stand-up and now he just keeps getting booked. shyt's been happening kind of fast for him.

Here's a set he's got on Bandcamp: http://mykewright.bandcamp.com/

I'm not a comic, but I guess some of the big things I've seen comedians mention is not to let hecklers get to you, realize that you're not going to kill every time (everyone bombs once in a while, and like someone else said...be social. It's all about connections. My boy didn't know ANYONE when he went out there, but he's a charismatic cat and just kept getting shows through talking to people and being approachable.
