I just read a deal that said Teach for America is a way around union laws in some of the school districts that need it the most. You start at lower pay and stuff like that. I'll try to find the article if you're interested.

From my understanding it's for rich (usually white) kids fresh out of college that want something to put on their resume. The completion rate is almost zero. I'd say if you're interested in teaching in a low performing school/district, go the traditional route. They'd be happy to have you.

No, you have the same salary and benefits as teachers in that district

Most of the rest you said is true

If you really want to become a teacher do it the traditional way.

I spent the last couple of years working in schools and met a couple of teach for a America people

Don't want to be a teacher, doing it for the experience and benefits for graduate school. Education is something I care a lot about though so this isn't for completely selfish reasons.

What are you in school for? Is it related to teaching?

This is part of the problem.

TFA is a vicious cycle
bright-eyed kids with good intentions hear about an opportunity to work in schools in bad areas and do good. also, can get their college debt absolved

they go to the schools and quickly realize that it sucks. Most just stick it out for a year or two then :camby:

after that they write on their MBA applications about how it was such an enriching experience and they helped others. :stopitslime:

real talk tho, you gotta be a special type of person to do well and not go crazy at them TFA schools
