TFA is a vicious cycle
bright-eyed kids with good intentions hear about an opportunity to work in schools in bad areas and do good. also, can get their college debt absolved

they go to the schools and quickly realize that it sucks. Most just stick it out for a year or two then :camby:

after that they write on their MBA applications about how it was such an enriching experience and they helped others. :stopitslime:

real talk tho, you gotta be a special type of person to do well and not go crazy at them TFA schools

This is pretty accurate as th TFA teachers that were at my school left after their first two years...they had a shytload of work to do for the program and the minute they got into any grad program, they dipped.

This is part of the problem.

exactly. ^^^^

don't do it if you honestly don't want to be a teacher. you won't make it

to get the benefits it is a two year commitment

you have to relocate, and it may be a place you don't want to be

it's not just rich white kids in the program, and the pay is the same as any first year teacher in the district

sociology/psychology, want to go to graduate school for either Policy or Education.

props, i have a sociology degree and want to do go back to get my masters in graduate

Yea trust me when they say they put in you in the most needy schools there not kidding.

The overall problem with TFA is that they do not prepare you at all for all that is involved in teaching even in a normal school much less a urban school.

There training i believe is something like 6 weeks? Not nearly enough, i could go on and on as i mentioned early i spent almost 4 years working in these type of schools and my girl is a H.S teacher

But trust me do your research before you jump in with them.

Job market for this degree pretty much forces graduate school. I see what you're saying, yea training is about 6 weeks. I've looked into but I'm going to do some more diggin.

what line of field are you in now if you don't mind sharing

ive been lucky , never had a problem getting jobs with my degree yet , and the times Ive had to switch has been because of funding cause, am in my almost dream job now , am a government social worker, i deal with medical benefits and the such. Eventually want to move up to policy.

yup lol, i think people under estimate how much of commitment being a teacher is, and with TFA, short training or not you are a full time teacher in one of the roughest districts in the nation, that is going to easily be 10 hour work days (no OT pay ) + prep time in the weekend

lol i just know a girl who who i told not to get in it but she , she ended up getting sent to kanasa city , she was like "o its kanas how bad could it be?"

:damn: she has no idea
