While I have some grips about Insecure and Issa Rae, it did fill a void and did a lot at an elite level (cinematography, soundtrack, diverse representation of “everyday” black folks).

Which can happen when young, Black and talented cast and crew are given opportunities and latitude AND are coupled with HBO-level production and resources.

There’s ZERO mass appeal shows for everyday black millennials, which says a lot about the film and TV industry (and cacs).

In a sense, it’s a miracle that it ever came out to begin with. As we saw with Rap shyt, if you don’t keep capturing lightning in a bottle as a black creator, the studio is quick to pull the plug and go back to what they are familiar and comfortable with.

“Have to be twice as good to get half as much” type shyt

Well said, I agree. We just don’t have that big community watch thread anymore for black entertainment. Love or hate insecure Twitter was really fun on Sunday nights because of it

Twitter is dead. I got off it over 6 years ago, but we would "Group watch" Insecure and Power lol And it was a precursor to gender wars stuff but still light with brehs seeing themselves in Lawerence and women seeing themselves in one of the women characters. The key to Insecure was NOBODY was some flawless character and it wasn't a "black men aint shyt" fest.

I never watched "rap shyt" but it on the surface seemed like a terrible low intelligence follow up to a show that you can say brought black people together where Insecure is having the same effect in other markets since its streaming internationally (giving black people abroad a normal show which is something they dont get as they tend to be fed fake Real Housewives shows or just trash tv).
