I interviewed for a role with no set time off per year. Basically, you can take between 2 and 4-6 weeks as you need with manager approval. I can see the pros and cons (depends on culture and your manager) so wondering if anyone here has been at a job with this and how it worked out?

My job transitioned to unlimited PTO. Not sure if it is because we started out with a standard PTO system prior, but it is never truly unlimited because people will judge you if you 'abuse' the system. I think there was a study that was done that said when PTO is discretionary instead of predetermined, people actually take less time off.

nah. don't fall for that trap. unlimited PTO is not what it sounds like. its a way to weed out the irresponsible people on the team.

and also, if it is unlimited PTO, that means if/when u leave the company, chances are pretty good u won't get a check for ur unused PTOs.

accrued pro is really the best. u can accrue months worth of PTOs and when u leave the company, u get a check for all those months. that check can come in very, very handy.

Yes. With team approval. So you're less likely to take off massive amounts of time when you're responsible to your team. But more likely to take more days off since you're not beholden to a manager.

We also have a mandatory minimum that everyone must take. Your first 2 weeks off are counted. Those are actually tracked and can be passed over. That way no one can say the company is trying to take away accumulated days.

We are also not allowed to respond to any form of digital communication while on vacation.

The unlimited time off at my company is not used to filter out unproductive employees. That's what are 5 touches interview process is for. It's about treating adults that we hire like adults.

We can also work remote whenever and from wherever. Again. Adults.

Not everything is a trap.

My job . .. take all the time u want off.

Just make sure u got all the time you want off already worked . .

So basically if I work 40 hours of OT..

I got 40 hours of OT leave time I can use if I want ..

Which is like 60 hours of regular time so bout lil over 7 days off .. n that's just 4 days of weekend of work ..

So yea we can work as much as we want to get off . .

And we get 7 hours every check attributed to time off as well ..

I had unlimited PTO once. It was fine. I used less PTO because there wasn't such a thing as unused PTO. Plus most of my wages was based on billable hours.

It's a trap like others said. Find an industry that supports government and you will get the 10 OPM holidays and an additional 2-3 weeks PTO.

United States is the only advanced economy in the world that does not guarantee its workers paid vacations.” According to the report:

  • Nearly one-fourth of U.S. companies offer no time off. A remarkable 23 percent of Americans have no paid vacations and no paid holidays.
  • 10 is the magic number. The average American worker receives 10 days of paid vacation per year. European countries, by contrast, mandate that employers offer at least 20 days a year. Some EU countries have even upped the requirement to 25 and 30 days.
  • Hourly workers are the exception, but there’s a catch. The bottom 25 percent of hourly workers only get an average of four paid vacation days a year, but the top 25 percent of hourly workers get 14 days.
