Trying to help a homeless person?

Right now, I'm trying to help someone get an ID card so he can apply for food stamps, medical care and his SS benefits, but all he has is a birth certificate.

However, he can't get a state ID or SS card without having either a state ID or a SS card. Vicious cycle.

Has anyone here experienced this and found any loopholes to use when the person is homeless?

Every single day that I work. Get him in touch with a shelter during the daytime. They have people who's job it is to bridge those connections. You generally can't get an id without a proof of residence so if they havent had any bills or utilities within the last 3-6 months it's gonna be tough but those people that do the job can make it work.

Thank you.

He's been homeless for a long time, and some of what mentioned I had also been wondering about.

I really appreciate your suggestion. Thanks again.

It didn’t say it on the GA site so I don’t know if it would help but I have helped someone get an ID that had no docs. One thing we did was a prepaid credit card from the store because their state accepted bank statements. I think they had a birth certificate and something else tho.

Like someone said I would look for programs because they have more resources. It’s a frustrating cycle for someone trying to get there life together.

That's a creative approach. I'll make a note of it if I need to try it.

Luckily, I literally just found a place here that specializes in this very thing, so hopefully we can follow it to fruition.

Hook him/her with a shelter / drop in shelter they really have the means to put the person on the right track. NYC recently started an IDNyc which is a a bit easier to get. Not sure what Georgia does.

I don't know what resources Georgia has as far as the homeless are concerned but in California, specifically San Diego, there are programs ran by places like St. Vincent's that will house the homeless and get them back on track. If they're an addict or an alcoholic they have to give that stuff up or they'll get dropped. These programs have housing and I'm sure the program would help then to establish residency so they can get an ID and work towards getting food stamps. Try looking for something similar.

Did he ask for this help?

No...but he will "allude" to it before he leaves. He is staying with me for the weekend, and I know when he leaves, he will start telling me how he wants to get his life together but then I won't hear from him anymore for about another year.

@MarloStanfield, you were who I thought of when I made this thread, but this is someone who I do not think it homeless by choice. At this point, I do not know anymore.
