The best way to learn is to have fun. If you're having fun, you'll play longer. And if you play longer you'll learn more. Don't dive into limited shyt and expect to have fun struggling. Buy the most fun option and you'll end up sticking with it.

That's a good budget for a Epiphone, Squier, Ibanez, and other cheaper brands that are still good quality. I'd start with acoustic just so you can learn how to finger and play "clean." Essential, especially if you're learning playing styles as intricate and stylistic as these. It's easy to get into bad playing habits when you're a beginner hiding behind a distorted electric guitar. Believe me.

Definitely have fun with some R&B and Latin grooves, and learn your Blues licks and scales. Get down those core skills of fingering techniques, sliding, and register isolation around tight grooves. This will be a good foundation before you really delve into African grooves and licks.

Theoretically, understanding "polyrythmic" musical structure is also essential to African music. It's essentially what unites and separates all "black" music at it's core from other music. So think about this as you're learning. In African music instruments play rhythmically around each other--with what you play on the off beat being just as important as what you play on beat. Funk music is especially useful in understanding this concept and is a great place to learn from the perspective of black music in the West. When James Brown told his band to play "on the one," and then started writing the best music ever, this is basically what he understood.
Can’t rep twice but thanks for the info. Really appreciate you giving me the theory behind it.

Went to Guitar center today to check out some acoustics, they had a cheap Ibanez, but the body was uncomfortable for me. Didn’t have much stock but a lot of stuff in the 400+ range.

The employees were legit useless tho - imma check out a real music store tomorrow and cop one from there. Believe they offer lessons as well, gonna relay this info to them.

What do y’all use to learn songs? What’s the best guitar tab software :lupe:

I had one back in the day called powertab I think

In music stores they have books like "The Beatles anthology" or some shyt or "Songs from Disney movies" or whatever and it's just the music usually in voice (lyrics) piano, and guitar. All types of different artists and movies and plays and shyt.

Anyway those books are free online :sas2:.

heres some good exercises for muscle memory and keeping the fingers limber, and reading music.

The start with the high E string, the add the second string, then 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th.

So if you are just starting out feel free to do the first set of exercises til you get good then move on.

if anyone can put them in a pdf, hollar at me. i'll rep

I always recommend looking into used guitars if you're buying. I'm on the guitar center used section everyday and I can't stress the gems that I've seen on there for dirt cheap. I've bought 2 guitars during Covid and walked away laughing. My boy was recently looking for a 3 piece drum kit to make hip hop beats on, found one on guitar center, used.

Yeah I was like fukk it when I bought mine - just walked into the shop told em my price range and the guy there was like. Just get an Eastman it comes with a lifetime warranty, it’s good quality, and it’s in your budget. Mine is shaped to where you can play the high notes on it easier (not a full body shape like most, has a lil curve in it idk what it’s called)

Idk if I got scammed it was 380, but it’s a good guitar nonetheless

I think you mean a cutaway. As long as you like it and it's comfortable and most importantly when you look at it, it makes you wanna pick it up and play. That little motivation is crucial.

It’s nice, I’m planning to do some damage on it tho. Playing it until the strings fall off.
Start with the cheap $100 guitars. It will take time for your hands/fingers to strengthen.

Just copped his course, it’s a lot of theory tho. He legit says you don’t even need a guitar for majority of the course it’s just music theory

I used to play and take lessons. I could read the music but now I just remember what the TAB are. I don't think I'll get back into it. The most fun I had with any music hobby was making beats on my computer.

@Lootpack can play the guitar.

That’s how he gets all the earthy broads.

Nicca pulled him a thick ass Jill Scott looking broad at the beginning of this month:lolbron:
