I thought this talk was very good on learning languages. It's best to watch it all but the principles and actions part starts at the 8 minute mark

I learned Portuguese... and I had a lot of hangups about learning it since I wasn't bilingual beforehand. But I honestly think that some classes/tutoring + media (tv, movies, children's books) in the target language + immersion in a country where people speak the language = language acquisition at any age!

I'm trying to learn Spanish this year, or at least SOME Spanish this year. Hopefully later in the year I'll be able to head to some Spanish speaking country, but until then I'm trying to learn as much as I can on my own. I work with a lot of Mexicans so maybe I'll learn something by osmosis

Anyway, who here got tips?

Know some Arabic
Know some Spanish
Know some Kiswahili

@QuintessentialBM speak on it breh

Ok, bruh...... The short version of how I learned Spanish....

Ages 7-12: Osmosis with basic greetings and other basic words.(Numbers, colors, ect)
Age 13-15: Took my first formal classes. Got a crash course in grammar.
Ages 16-20:Utilized books and internet.... Lots of free resources that break things down that books or natives don't speak on. Independent study,

I put in a lot of hours between 16-20.... Like anywhere from 2-3 hrs daily.... That's how bad I wanted to learn. Eventually, it paid off.

With the right materials, you can learn any language for less than 100.00(plus the cost to maintain your ISP).

Surround yourself with people who speak the language and practise

At first you won't know jack and might pick up random words and numbers but eventually you move on to the grammar and structure of the language e.g. how to form a sentence and before you know it you're able to hold a decent conversation.

After that you just need to bulk up your vocabulary.

la grammaire c'est trop dure....fukk...et les francais sont des a$$holes, parce que des que c'est observable que tu fais des erreurs en francais, ils commence a t'emmerde...so fukk 'em

Learning Spanish now, I started learning when I was like 24. I Speak it well, so well that when I go to Tijuana for tacos the natives always ask where I am from. When I say Estados Unidos they always ask where my parents are from when I hit them with the U.S again they hit me with the :ohhh:

A lot of them think I am from Veracruz or the Dominican Republic, I say naw playboy my roots is from Chicago :birdman:

Spanish Speakers always say I have a really good accent or that I lack the American/gringo one.
My tongue skills are on a hundred thousand trillion :ohlawd:

My bad tips, I would say with Spanish it is important to understand how each letter sounds because reading Spanish is easy no matter how big the word is because the letters never (99% of the time) change sounds.

Also Every time I learn a new word I pronounce each syllable slowly and then speed it up so that I make sure I am saying it right. this is important, dont be lazy or in a rush, learning a new language is not something quick so take your time and do it right. Instead of learning 100 words in a day but you sounds like crap speaking.

Learning materials I would recommend is a book called 501 Spanish verbs its like $11 on amazon for the newer edition that comes with a CD rom, the older edition is like $5. This should help you understand how, why, and when to use each tease.

I would recommend duolingo to keep your mind in spanish mode, add me KingDavid22 this is like a free phone version of rosetta stone except it isnt trash and its free on the pc/website too.

A PC app that I found was good is called Fluenz, I would recommend it, its not as popular as rosetta stone but I think it is 100 times better, it expains what the lesson is about before you start so you learn stuff and also understand why to use certain things.
Here is a demo of the app, the chick is your teacher

I would say it is my overall fav app to use.

Also if you dont have time to do apps look into Michel Thomas Or Pimsleur they are audio things, I've never used them but my bro did and it helped his Spanish alot he works full time and had 3 kids but I am able to hold basic a conversation with him. and he knows somethings that I dont.

The Main tip is just to practice, you can't learn a language by reading, you have to use it. If you can find a spanish speaking chick to practice with, also the parents will love you and think highly of you just because you are learning Spanish. Dont be afraid to make a mistake, mistakes are great because a person can correct you or explain it better so you understand it.

Also, try to teach what you know to somebody else, they say the best way to learn is to teach, it helps strengthen what you know.
