Going back to uni to study Computer Science Msci in a years time. Went down the wrong road in life for a couple years & wised up in the end.. I'm fortunate to have good grades and a clean record. Just have to work hard on building work experience until I finish.
Did you start the degree how is it?

Are you originally a computer science major? How did you become a developer

I went to school for MIS. Graduated barely knowing how to write a SELECT query. Partially cause I was bullshytting in school and partially cause the MIS curriculum is not that technical. Most of my former classmates are like PMs and things like that now. I had a job as a consultant and took the Java certification and used it to get a developer job...the rest is history as they say

Just saw this, I was a portfolio manager for a boutique hedge fund with offices in China and America. Super stressful, but I loved it. I didn't follow the usual route of high end schools, mostly through performance and timing got me the part.
Now I just trade for myself and have a few projects I am working on.

Anybody ever work in the Risk/Compliance side of Banking?
no but with them. compliance had a boom a few years ago, but i think thats calmed down a bit, although they are still hiring.

Risk management will always be around, although can be a little dull. tbh both compliance and risk are dull. Compliance pays better than risk at the moment though.

How did you brehs decide which area of finance was best for you?
I think i want to go into financial planning, i think its important to bring some of that knowledge back to our communities. I enjoy having conversations with people who know what their long term goals are

However, i dont want to feel like a salesman always hawking products and services with people.

How did you get on that path? What is the average day like in that field?
Applied for a summer internship my junior year of college(I was really applying for anything that would pay me), ended up getting one with The Bank of New York Mellon. Did a good job that summer, got an offer the for a FT position after graduation from the same bank, and got placed in their municipal/corporate debt business as an account Assistant, and in two years got an offer from another bank to be in their mergers and acquisition Department as an account assistant. 2 years after that(2015), got promoted to an AVP with my own portfolio of M&A accounts.

The average day fluctuates, I spend most of my time reviewing contracts and agreements, talking to customers and their lawyers(I have a bunch of relationships with law firms and lawyers) and having my assistant set up wires for releases for my clients.

The best part of my job (pre-COVID) was the traveling out of state, taking my clients out to eat and drink, all on the Banks Dime, I miss that shyt a lot :wow::mjcry:

I have a finance degree but Im currently in the military. I graduated from non-targeted school for high-level finance: Pace University. Ideally I want to have my own Private Equity fund but I'm trying to identify pathways where there's not a fast glass ceiling for blacks.

Getting ready to change my major to Finance, while getting my certificate for real estate. Wish me luck brehs
I seen that someone replied to this thread, so I decided to find my old post.

Since this post almost 4 years ago (I was a 19 year old Junior in college going on 20), I’ve gotten 2 Bachelor degrees in Finance & Statistics (they ended the real estate program while I was taking it :francis:)

I remember when I was juggling 2 jobs and taking 18 units a semester just to graduate in 4 years :mjcry: once I finally made it, I felt like I wasn’t ready. Added the second major, and stayed another year.

Best decision I’ve made thus far.....currently working at an university, and will use my job to get half off or free grad school tuition for my MBA once covid stops :wow:
