Eve was created after Adam as a helper for him, not to say she was less important but that's the role God gave her. Without her Adam would not be able to fulfill his role, she would help him do his job and they would reproduce together. They were given roles.

The problem started because Adam didn't fulfill his role as the head. He was suppose to watch and protect from evil outside influences. Eve was deceived by the serpent and Adam followed her lead. He should have made the decision not to follow Eve, then God could have stepped in and reworked the situation without having to kick both of them out of the Garden of Eden.
